**Canadian National 96** is a E-10-a class [2-6-0](/source/2-6-0) "Mogul" type [steam locomotive](/source/Steam_locomotive), built in 1910 by the [Canadian Locomotive Company](/source/Canadian_Locomotive_Company) (CLC) for the [Grand Trunk Railway](/source/Grand_Trunk_Railway) (GT). It is preserved at the [Age of Steam Roundhouse](/source/Age_of_Steam_Roundhouse) in [Sugarcreek, Ohio](/source/Sugarcreek%2C_Ohio).

## History

The locomotive was built in 1910 by the [Canadian Locomotive Company](/source/Canadian_Locomotive_Company) in [Kingston, Ontario](/source/Kingston%2C_Ontario), for the [Grand Trunk Railway](/source/Grand_Trunk_Railway) as No. 1024.[1][2][3][4] In 1923, when the GT merged with the [Canadian National Railways](/source/Canadian_National_Railways) (CN), No. 1024 was renumbered as No. 926 and later as No. 96.[1] The locomotive hauled light freight trains across [Canada](/source/Canada) and on small branch lines in [Ontario](/source/Ontario) until it was retired in 1958.[1][5]

In June 1959, No. 96 was purchased by [F. Nelson Blount](/source/F._Nelson_Blount), who moved it for display the [Edaville Railroad](/source/Edaville_Railroad) in February 1963.[6][4] In October 1969, it was added to his steam locomotive collection at [Steamtown, U.S.A.](/source/Steamtown_USA) in [Bellows Falls, Vermont](/source/Bellows_Falls%2C_Vermont).[6][4] It was used as a spare parts source for sister locomotive [No. 89](/source/Canadian_National_89).[6][7][3][4] In 1986, while the Steamtown equipment was being transferred to [Scranton, Pennsylvania](/source/Scranton%2C_Pennsylvania), No. 96 was sold to Horst Muller of [Brantford, Ontario](/source/Brantford%2C_Ontario), who placed it in storage for eight years.[1][8][3][4]

On November 16, 1994, No. 96 was purchased by Jerry Jacobson and moved with the rest of his steam-locomotive collection to the [Ohio Central Railroad System](/source/Ohio_Central_Railroad_System) (OCR) in [Coshocton, Ohio](/source/Coshocton%2C_Ohio).[1][6][4] In 2011, Jacobson's collection was moved to the new [Age of Steam Roundhouse](/source/Age_of_Steam_Roundhouse) in [Sugarcreek, Ohio](/source/Sugarcreek%2C_Ohio), where it remains on static display.[9][1]
