# Canadanthus

***Canadanthus*** is a North American [monotypic](/source/Monotypic) genus of [flowering plants](/source/Flowering_plant) in the family [Asteraceae](/source/Asteraceae).[2] The only species is ***Canadanthus modestus*** (formerly *Aster modestus*), commonly known as **great northern aster** or **western bog aster**. It is native to most of Canada ([Alberta](/source/Alberta), [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), [Manitoba](/source/Manitoba), [New Brunswick](/source/New_Brunswick), [Ontario](/source/Ontario), [Saskatchewan](/source/Saskatchewan), [Quebec](/source/Quebec), and [Yukon](/source/Yukon)) and to northern parts of the United States ([Alaska](/source/Alaska), [Idaho](/source/Idaho), [Michigan](/source/Michigan), [Minnesota](/source/Minnesota), [Montana](/source/Montana), [North Dakota](/source/North_Dakota), [Oregon](/source/Oregon), and [Washington](/source/Washington_(state))).[3]

## Description

*Canadanthus modestus* is an herbaceous perennial spreading by means of underground [rhizomes](/source/Rhizomes), thus producing large [colonies](/source/Colony_(biology)). It has several [flower heads](/source/Flower_heads), each with pink or purple [ray florets](/source/Ray_florets) and white or yellow [disc florets](/source/Disc_floret).[1]
