His father, Constantin Ressu was a journalist and had studied law in [Brussels](/source/Brussels). He was also an artist in his spare time. In 1887, Ressu was enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in [Bucharest](/source/Bucharest). He continued his studies at the [School of Fine Arts](/source/George_Enescu_University_of_Arts_of_Ia%C8%99i) in [Iași](/source/Ia%C8%99i), where he studied with painters [Gheorghe Popovici](/source/Gheorghe_Popovici) and [Gheorghe Panaiteanu Bardasare](/source/Gheorghe_Panaiteanu_Bardasare). In 1902, he finished his studies in Iași, being awarded a silver medal, and left Romania for [Paris](/source/Paris), seeking to further develop his artistic skills. In Paris, he studied at the [Académie Julian](/source/Acad%C3%A9mie_Julian).

In 1908, Ressu returned to Romania and became interested in social matters, contributing satirical drawings to several publications, including *Furnica*, *Facla*, and *[Adevărul](/source/Adev%C4%83rul)*. In the same year, he became a member of the [Social Democratic Party of Romania](/source/Social_Democratic_Party_of_Romania_(1910%E2%80%931918)) (or, rather, its surviving Bucharest circle, *Socialist Union of Romania*, formed around the paper *[România Muncitoare](/source/Rom%C3%A2nia_Muncitoare)*). In 1910, his works ([landscapes](/source/Landscape_art) and paintings with bucolic themes) were featured in the [*Tinerimii Artistice*](/source/Symbolist_movement_in_Romania#Birth_of_Tinerimea_Artistică) ("Artistic Youth") exhibition.
