'''Camera bags''' are a 20th-century development for the convenient carrying and quick access to high-end [camera](/source/camera) equipment. They replaced fitted leather cases that were supplied with the earliest cameras.<ref name="Vintage">{{Cite web|date=2015-09-30|title=A brief history of camera cases & the best modern bags|url=https://vintage-camera-lenses.com/a-brief-history-of-camera-bags-the-best-modern-bags/|access-date=2022-02-08|website=Vintage Camera Lenses|language=en-US|archive-date=2022-02-07|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220207230527/https://vintage-camera-lenses.com/a-brief-history-of-camera-bags-the-best-modern-bags/|url-status=usurped}}</ref>

In the 1970s, war and documentary photographers used fishing bags made by English companies Brady and [Billingham](/source/Billingham_Bags).<ref name=Pierce>{{cite web |last1=Pierce |first1=Bill |title=Nuts & Bolts: In Search of the Perfect Camera Bag |url=http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0204/nutsandbolts.htm |website=digitaljournalist.org |publisher=The Digital Journalist |access-date=8 February 2022 |archive-date=8 February 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220208225958/http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0204/nutsandbolts.htm |url-status=live }}</ref> Billingham noticed their waterproof soft bags were popular with photographers and modified the fishing bag with padding to protect camera gear.<ref name=Pedlars>{{cite web|title=An Interview with Harry Billingham|url=http://www.pedlars.co.uk/pedlarsworld/stories/an-interview-with-harry-billingham/|work=Pedlars|date=18 November 2014|url-status=usurped|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150518232127/https://www.pedlars.co.uk/pedlarsworld/stories/an-interview-with-harry-billingham|archive-date=2015-05-18}}</ref>

In 1975, [photojournalist](/source/photojournalist) Jim Domke wanted a bag to carry all his camera gear and worked with a tent manufacturer to prototype a canvas camera bag. Feedback from photographers at the [1976 Republican National Convention](/source/1976_Republican_National_Convention) changed the design to arrange the gear vertically, accessed from above. Domke sold his company in 1990 to [Tiffen](/source/Tiffen_(company)).<ref name="Bridge">{{Cite web|date=2014-07-21|title=Camera Bags and Cases: The Unlikely Story of an Essential Imaging Tool - The Broadcast Bridge - Connecting IT to Broadcast|url=https://www.thebroadcastbridge.com/content/entry/293/camera-bags-and-cases-the-unlikely-story-of-an-essential-imaging-tool|access-date=2022-02-08|website=The Broadcast Bridge|language=en|archive-date=2022-02-07|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220207225408/https://www.thebroadcastbridge.com/content/entry/293/camera-bags-and-cases-the-unlikely-story-of-an-essential-imaging-tool|url-status=live}}</ref>
