# Camden Catacombs

System of underground passages in London

The **Camden Catacombs** are a system of underground passages in [Camden Town](/source/Camden_Town) in north London underneath part of the [Camden markets](/source/Camden_markets), constructed in the 19th century, and as of 2012[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Camden_Catacombs&action=edit) owned by [Network Rail](/source/Network_Rail). They are not true [catacombs](/source/Catacomb) as they were never used as repositories for dead bodies, instead being an underground area originally used as stables for horses and [pit ponies](/source/Pit_pony) working on the railways.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

The catacombs also included an underground pool for canal boats operating on the nearby [Regent's Canal](/source/Regent's_Canal). They are not open to visitors owing to danger of flooding.[1][2]
