**Callum Anthony Howe** (born 9 April 1994) is an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays as a [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)) for [EFL League Two](/source/EFL_League_Two) club [York City](/source/York_City_F.C.).

Howe began his career at [Scunthorpe United](/source/Scunthorpe_United_F.C.), turning professional in 2012. He spent three years at the club without making a first-team appearance and instead enjoyed [loan](/source/Loan_(sports)) spells at [Bradford Park Avenue](/source/Bradford_Park_Avenue_A.F.C.), [Frickley Athletic](/source/Frickley_Athletic_F.C.), [Gainsborough Trinity](/source/Gainsborough_Trinity_F.C.), [Gateshead](/source/Gateshead_F.C.) and [Alfreton Town](/source/Alfreton_Town_F.C.). He was named Frickley Athletic's Player of the Season for 2012–13. He signed with [Lincoln City](/source/Lincoln_City_F.C.) in July 2015. He had loan spells at [Southport](/source/Southport_F.C.) and [Eastleigh](/source/Eastleigh_F.C.) before helping Lincoln to win the [National League](/source/National_League_(division)) title in 2016–17. He was sold on to [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.) in January 2018 before moving on to [Harrogate Town](/source/Harrogate_Town_F.C.) four months later. He was sold to [Solihull Moors](/source/Solihull_Moors_F.C.) for an undisclosed fee in July 2019 and was named on the 2019–20 National League Team of the Year. In July 2023, he joined York City for an undisclosed fee and went on to be named on the 2024–25 National League Team of the Year, going on to win the National League title with York the following season.

## Career

### Scunthorpe United

Howe began his career at [Scunthorpe United](/source/Scunthorpe_United_F.C.) and was the only [youth team](/source/Youth_system) player to be offered a professional [contract](/source/Association_football_contracts) by [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)) [Alan Knill](/source/Alan_Knill) in 2012.[4] On 3 December 2012, he joined [Conference North](/source/National_League_North) side [Bradford Park Avenue](/source/Bradford_Park_Avenue_A.F.C.) on a one-month [loan](/source/Loan_(sports)).[5] He made his first-team debut for the Avenue 12 days later in a 2–0 defeat at [Worcester City](/source/Worcester_City_F.C.). He made one further appearance before his loan spell at [Horsfall Stadium](/source/Horsfall_Stadium) came to an end. On 15 February 2013, he joined [Frickley Athletic](/source/Frickley_Athletic_F.C.) of the [Northern Premier League](/source/Northern_Premier_League) Premier Division on a one-month loan; a colony of former Scunthorpe players were already at the club, including [Terry Barwick](/source/Terry_Barwick), Joe Wilcox, Jake Picton and Tom Johnstone.[6] United manager [Brian Laws](/source/Brian_Laws) said that "I believe he will gain a lot of experience by going into the [non-League](/source/Non-League_football) system and playing some games".[7] He impressed at the "Blues" so much as to win the club's Player of the Season award despite only arriving in the second half of the [2012–13](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_Northern_Premier_League) season.[8]

On 22 November 2013, he returned to the Conference North after joining [Gainsborough Trinity](/source/Gainsborough_Trinity_F.C.) on a one-month loan deal, where fellow "Iron" player [Jamie Wootton](/source/Jamie_Wootton) was also on loan.[9] The next day he scored on his debut in a 2–0 victory at [Colwyn Bay](/source/Colwyn_Bay_F.C.). His loan at [The Northolme](/source/The_Northolme) was extended until the end of the [2013–14](/source/2013%E2%80%9314_Football_Conference) season.[10] He played a total of 24 games for [Steve Housham](/source/Steve_Housham)'s "Holy Blues", scoring two goals. He signed a new one-year contract with Scunthorpe in May 2014 after reportedly being highly rated by manager [Russ Wilcox](/source/Russ_Wilcox).[11]

On 10 October 2014, he joined [Gateshead](/source/Gateshead_F.C.) of the [Conference Premier](/source/National_League_(division)) on a one-month loan.[12] He joined the "Tynesiders" after manager [Gary Mills](/source/Gary_Mills_(footballer%2C_born_1961)) lost James Curtis due to injury.[12] The following day he was declared a hero on his "Heed" debut after scoring the equalising goal in a 1–1 draw at [Forest Green Rovers](/source/Forest_Green_Rovers_F.C.), which stretched the club's unbeaten run to nine games.[13] However, he only featured in one further game at the [Gateshead International Stadium](/source/Gateshead_International_Stadium) before his loan spell ended.[14] On 16 January 2015, he joined Conference Premier side [Alfreton Town](/source/Alfreton_Town_F.C.) on a three-month loan deal.[15] He featured in 13 games for [Nicky Law](/source/Nicky_Law_(footballer%2C_born_1961))'s "Reds", and scored one goal in a 4–2 win over [Southport](/source/Southport_F.C.) at [North Street](/source/North_Street_(stadium)) on 7 February.[16] He was released by Scunthorpe at the end of the season.[17]

### Lincoln City

On 15 July 2015, Howe signed a one-year contract with [Lincoln City](/source/Lincoln_City_F.C.) after impressing manager [Chris Moyses](/source/Chris_Moyses) on trial.[18] He became a first-team regular at [Sincil Bank](/source/Sincil_Bank) during the [2015–16](/source/2015%E2%80%9316_National_League) season, making 31 appearances. On 25 August 2016, he joined Southport on a one-month loan after "Sandgrounders" defender [Chris Doyle](/source/Chris_Doyle_(footballer)) picked up a long-term knee injury.[19] He played 18 games for [Steve Burr](/source/Steve_Burr)'s Southport, and after returning to Lincoln he went on to feature 13 times in the latter half of the [2016–17](/source/2016%E2%80%9317_National_League) season as the club regained [promotion](/source/Promotion_and_relegation) to the [English Football League](/source/English_Football_League) after finishing as champions of the National League.

In June 2017, he signed a 12-month contract extension with Lincoln.[20] However, "Imps" manager [Danny Cowley](/source/Danny_Cowley) stated that he was happy with the centre-back options in [Luke Waterfall](/source/Luke_Waterfall), [Sean Raggett](/source/Sean_Raggett), [Robert Dickie](/source/Robert_Dickie_(footballer)) and [Michael Bostwick](/source/Michael_Bostwick), so would look to loan Howe out so that he could find first-team football elsewhere.[21] On 15 August 2017, he joined National League side [Eastleigh](/source/Eastleigh_F.C.) on a five-month loan deal, with the "Spitfires" missing both [Réda Johnson](/source/R%C3%A9da_Johnson) and [Ryan Cresswell](/source/Ryan_Cresswell) due to injury.[22] Manager [Richard Hill](/source/Richard_Hill_(footballer%2C_born_1963)) said that: "I've known Callum and been a big admirer of his for quite a while, he and [centre-back] [Boycey](/source/Andrew_Boyce) played together at Scunthorpe – in fact they're best mates". He went on to serve as club [captain](/source/Captain_(association_football)), scoring four goals in 28 matches, and upon being recalled by Lincoln in January, Eastleigh boss [Andy Hessenthaler](/source/Andy_Hessenthaler) said that "he's been great, in the last couple of weeks especially".[23]

### Port Vale

On 31 January 2018, Howe joined [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.) for an undisclosed fee, signing an 18-month contract.[24] Manager [Neil Aspin](/source/Neil_Aspin) had also signed centre-backs [Charlie Raglan](/source/Charlie_Raglan) and Kyle Howkins on loan earlier in the day.[25] He was [transfer](/source/Transfer_(association_football))-listed at the end of the [2017–18](/source/2017%E2%80%9318_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season after making just three appearances for the "Valiants".[26]

### Harrogate Town

On 25 May 2018, Howe was sold on to National League newcomers [Harrogate Town](/source/Harrogate_Town_F.C.) for a "small fee".[27][28] He scored nine goals from 48 appearances during the [2018–19](/source/2018%E2%80%9319_National_League) season, helping [Simon Weaver](/source/Simon_Weaver)'s Town to reach the play-offs, where they were beaten 3–1 at [AFC Fylde](/source/AFC_Fylde) at the quarter-final stage.[29] He was named as Harrogate's Players' Player of the Season.[30]

### Solihull Moors

On 27 July 2019, Howe signed a three-year contract with National League side [Solihull Moors](/source/Solihull_Moors_F.C.) after moving for an undisclosed fee that was reported to be a Harrogate club record.[30][31] He scored six goals in 45 appearances in the [2019–20](/source/2019%E2%80%9320_National_League) season, which was permanently suspended on 26 March due to the [COVID-19 pandemic in England](/source/COVID-19_pandemic_in_England), with Moors in eighth-place.[32] He was named on the National League Team of the Year, along with centre-back partner Alex Gudger. A knee injury restricted him to just five appearances in the [2020–21](/source/2020%E2%80%9321_National_League) campaign.[33] He was given a two-year contract extension by manager [Neal Ardley](/source/Neal_Ardley) after returning to full fitness from hip surgery.[34] He played 32 league games in the [2021–22](/source/2021%E2%80%9322_National_League) season and went on to score in the 3–1 play-off semi-final victory over [Chesterfield](/source/Chesterfield_F.C.) at [Damson Park](/source/Damson_Park).[35][36] He played at the [London Stadium](/source/London_Stadium) in the [play-off final](/source/2022_National_League_play-off_final), which ended in a 2–1 defeat to [Grimsby Town](/source/Grimsby_Town_F.C.) after [extra time](/source/Overtime_(sports)).[37] He was appointed as club captain following the departure of [Kyle Storer](/source/Kyle_Storer) in January 2023.[38] He scored three goals in 36 games in the [2022–23](/source/2022%E2%80%9323_National_League) season.[35]

### York City

On 7 July 2023, Howe was signed by National League side [York City](/source/York_City_F.C.) for an undisclosed fee.[39] He was named in the National League Team of the Week for his performance in a 0–0 draw with [Kidderminster Harriers](/source/Kidderminster_Harriers_F.C.) on 9 March.[40] He played 42 of York's 46 league games in the [2023–24](/source/2023%E2%80%9324_National_League) campaign.[35]

Howe captained York to four successive wins, which took the "Minstermen" to the top of the table by mid-September 2024.[41] He was named in the Non-League Paper Team of the Day for his performance in a 0–0 draw away at [Aldershot Town](/source/Aldershot_Town_F.C.) on 21 September.[42] On 1 December, he was named in the Team of the Day and the Team of the Week after scoring in a 3–0 win over [Southend United](/source/Southend_United_F.C.).[43] In the return fixture with Aldershot Town, he scored and provided an assist in a 7–2 victory.[44] He started every league game of the [2024–25](/source/2024%E2%80%9325_National_League) season.[35] York qualified for the play-off semi-final, where they were beaten by [Oldham Athletic](/source/Oldham_Athletic_A.F.C.).[45] He was named on the National League Team of the Year for the second time, alongside teammates Harrison Male and Ollie Pearce.[46]

He missed a month of action after sustaining a head injury in mid-November 2025.[47] Three months later, he earned praise from manager [Stuart Maynard](/source/Stuart_Maynard) for his leadership qualities and hard work during training.[48] He played 31 games during the [2025–26](/source/2025%E2%80%9326_National_League) campaign,[35] including a substitute appearance in the 1–1 draw away to [Rochdale](/source/Rochdale_A.F.C.) that won York the league title and promotion back into the Football League.[49]

## Style of play

Howe is a central [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)) with good aerial ability in both boxes.[31]
