{{Short description|American record label}}
'''Calla Records''' was an American [independent record label](/source/independent_record_label) based in New York City, active from approximately 1965 to 1977. The label released [soul music](/source/soul_music) and was run by Nate McCalla (1930–1980).<ref name=Burnstein/>

McCalla was an associate and bodyguard for [Morris Levy](/source/Morris_Levy) who headed [Roulette Records](/source/Roulette_Records).

Artists recording for the label include [J.J. Jackson](/source/J.J._Jackson_(singer)), Jimmie Raye, [The Sandpebbles](/source/The_Sandpebbles_(R%26B_group)), Little Jerry Williams (aka [Swamp Dogg](/source/Swamp_Dogg)), [Jean Wells](/source/Jean_Wells), [The Emotions](/source/The_Emotions), [The Fuzz](/source/The_Fuzz_(band)), [Lonnie Youngblood](/source/Lonnie_Youngblood), [The Persuaders](/source/The_Persuaders_(band)), and [Geraldine Hunt](/source/Geraldine_Hunt) among others.<ref>[http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/callarecords.htm Discography at ''Soulful Kinda Music'' magazine]</ref> Initially distributed by [Cameo-Parkway Records](/source/Cameo-Parkway_Records), the label became part of [Roulette Records](/source/Roulette_Records). The label was subsequently distributed by Shakat Records, a United States [disco](/source/disco_music) label<ref>[https://www.discogs.com/label/194524-Shakat-Records Particulars of Shakat Records]; [Discogs](/source/Discogs). In 1968, the Calla Records catalogue was acquired by [Warner Bros. Records](/source/Warner_Bros._Records).<ref>Others assert that the rights were licensed, rather than sold. See David Edwards and Mike Callahan, [http://www.bsnpubs.com/roulette/calla.html Calla Album Discography]; Both Sides Now Publications. Calla Records ceased operations in 1977. McCalla was found murdered, execution style, in 1980, allegedly on the orders of Morris Levy.<ref name=Burnstein>Scott M.
