# Call duration

In [telecommunications](/source/Telecommunications), the term **call duration** has the following meanings:

1. In [telephone](/source/Telephone) systems, the [time](/source/Time) between (a) the instant a [circuit](/source/Telecommunication_circuit), *i.e.,* [off-hook](/source/Off-hook) condition at each end, is established between the [call originator](/source/Call_originator) and the [call receiver](/source/Call_receiver) and (b) the instant the call originator or the call receiver terminates the call.
1. In [data transmission](/source/Data_transmission), the duration of the [information transfer](/source/Information_transfer) [phase](/source/Phase_(waves)) of an information transfer transaction.
