'''Calimerius''' ({{langx|it|Calimero}}, [Byzantine Greek](/source/Byzantine_Greek): ''Καλημέριος'') (died 280 AD) was an early [bishop of Milan](/source/bishop_of_Milan). He is honoured as a [Saint](/source/Saint) in the [Catholic](/source/Catholic_Church) and [Eastern Orthodox](/source/Eastern_Orthodox_Church) churches and his feast day is on July 31.

==Life==
The only thing known for certain about him was that he was a bishop whose relics were conserved in the [Basilica of Saint Calimerius](/source/Basilica_di_San_Calimero) in Milan, after his death.<ref name="corriere.it">{{Cite web|title=Eventi e locali a Milano scelti per te da ViviMilano|url=https://vivimilano.corriere.it/|access-date=2020-10-17|website=vivimilano.corriere.it}}</ref> He was probably not a contemporary and disciple of [Pope Telesphorus](/source/Pope_Telesphorus) (2nd century), as is often stated, but lived in the third century, with an episcopate of 270–280.<ref name="corriere.it"/><ref>{{Cite web|title=San Calimero di Milano su santiebeati.it|url=http://www.santiebeati.it/dettaglio/91965|access-date=2020-10-17|website=Santiebeati.it}}</ref>

==Legends==
According to one version his legend, he was born to a noble [Roman](/source/Ancient_Rome) family, entered military service and reached the rank of officer when he was converted to Christianity by saints [Faustinus and Jovita](/source/Faustinus_and_Jovita). According to another legend, he was born in [Greece](/source/Greece), and was educated at [Rome](/source/Rome). He was a disciple of [Pope Telesphorus](/source/Pope_Telesphorus). He succeeded [St. Castricianus](/source/Castritian) (''San Castriziano''). He was ordained priest by [Castricianus](/source/Castritian) and served at the Basilica Fausta (now the church of [Saints Vitalis and Agricola](/source/Saints_Vitalis_and_Agricola)).<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://urban.hunter.cuny.edu/~thead/gervase.htm |title=Letter of Ambrose of Milan on the<!-- Bot generated title --> |access-date=2007-11-14 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080516012528/http://urban.hunter.cuny.edu/~thead/gervase.htm |archive-date=2008-05-16 |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref name="ortodossia.info">{{Cite web |url=http://www.ortodossia.info/sito-provvisorio/Agiografia2.htm |title=Santi milanesi della Chiesa Ortodossa - ortodossia a Milano<!-- Bot generated title --> |access-date=2007-11-14 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070929223315/http://www.ortodossia.info/sito-provvisorio/Agiografia2.htm |archive-date=2007-09-29 |url-status=dead }}</ref> At the death of [Castricianus](/source/Castritian), he was elected bishop.<ref name="ortodossia.info"/>

According to his legend, when he became bishop of [Milan](/source/Milan), he preached in the region and was killed during the persecutions of Christians by [Commodus](/source/Commodus) or [Hadrian](/source/Hadrian), by being flung headfirst into a [well](/source/Water_well).

==Calimerius and the well==
Calimerius' relics were exhumed in the eighth century by Bishop Tommaso Grassi of Milan. The [urn](/source/urn) and the relics were found submerged in water, perhaps due to the many underground channels that ran under the city.<ref name="corriere.it"/> However, the fact that his relics were found this way led to the legend that Calimerius was flung into a well. In the eleventh century, the ''Datiana Historia'', written by an anonymous author, states that Calimerius was flung into a well as revenge for having baptized so many pagans.<ref name="corriere.it"/> The same source includes the detail that Calimerius was a Greek raised in Rome, as well as the fact that he was a disciple of Telesphorus, although both claims may be historically doubtful.<ref name="corriere.it"/> Another legend states that he was a Roman of noble origin, who, after serving in the military, was converted by [Saints Faustinus and Jovita](/source/Saints_Faustinus_and_Jovita) and was elected bishop of Milan. The dates on a plaque of marble in the interior of the [Cathedral of Milan](/source/Cathedral_of_Milan) state that his episcopate lasted from 139 to 192, but these dates, due to disputes with Rome, may have been falsified in the eleventh century in order to make the diocese of Milan appear to be more ancient than it actually was. Thus, it considered [Saint Barnabas](/source/Saint_Barnabas) of the [Apostolic Age](/source/Apostolic_Age) as its first bishop in order to become more independent of Rome.<ref>Compare [C. J. Hefele](/source/C._J._Hefele), ''Das Sendschreiben des Apostels Barnabas,'' Tübingen, 1840; [O. Braunsberger](/source/O._Braunsberger), ''Der Apostel Barnabas,'' Mainz, 1876.</ref> As [Hippolyte Delehaye](/source/Hippolyte_Delehaye) writes, "To have lived amongst the Saviour's immediate following was ... honorable ... and accordingly old patrons of churches were identified with certain persons in the [gospels](/source/gospels) or who were supposed to have had some part in [Christ's](/source/Christ) life on earth."<ref>[Hippolyte Delehaye](/source/Hippolyte_Delehaye), ''The Legends of the Saints'' (Dublin, Four Courts Press, 1955), 37.</ref>

==Veneration==
[Saint Ennodius](/source/Saint_Ennodius), in an [epigram](/source/epigram), writes that the basilica of San Calimero was built in the fifth century to hold the [relics](/source/relics) of Calimerius.

The waters of a well said to have been the place of his death acquired special significance. Every July 31, his feast day, the sick would drink of this water. In times of [drought](/source/drought), priests would put some of the miraculous water into a bottle and pour it over the fields.<ref name="corriere.it"/>

There are basilicas dedicated to him at [Pasturo](/source/Pasturo) and the Santuario della Madonna di San Calimero is located in [Bolladello di Cairate](/source/Bolladello_di_Cairate).
