==Biography==
Born in [Providence](/source/Providence%2C_Rhode_Island) in the [Rhode Island Colony](/source/Colony_of_Rhode_Island_and_Providence_Plantations), Baker moved to New York in 1790; studied law, was [admitted to the bar](/source/Admission_to_the_bar_in_the_United_States) and began practicing. He married Sarah Stull and they had two children, Brockholst L Baker and Ruth M Baker Hamilton.<ref>{{cite web|title=Caleb Baker|url=https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/7741218|publisher=Find A Grave|accessdate=August 12, 2013}}</ref>  He resided in the towns of [Chemung](/source/Chemung%2C_New_York), [Ashland](/source/Ashland%2C_Chemung_County%2C_New_York), and Newtown (now [Elmira](/source/Elmira%2C_New_York)), [Tioga County](/source/Tioga_County%2C_New_York) from 1790 to 1836. These towns are now in Chemung County, due to the partitioning of Tioga County. He moved to and lived in [Southport](/source/Southport%2C_New_York), [Chemung County](/source/Chemung_County%2C_New_York), from 1836 until his death.

==Career==
Baker served as [assessor](/source/Assessor_(property)) of the town of Chemung in 1791.  He taught school in [Wellsburg](/source/Wellsburg%2C_New_York), Chemung County, in 1803 and 1804.  He was appointed [surrogate](/source/New_York_Surrogate's_Court) of Tioga County on April 7, 1806, April 13, 1825, and again in 1829.  He was appointed judge of the [Court of Common Pleas](/source/New_York_Court_of_Common_Pleas) in 1810, and served as member of the [New York State Assembly](/source/New_York_State_Assembly) in 1814, 1815, and again in 1829.
