For a long time, the four species of ''Calciphilopteris'' were included in the [polyphyletic](/source/polyphyletic) genus ''[Doryopteris](/source/Doryopteris)''. [Molecular phylogenetic](/source/Molecular_phylogenetic) [studies](/source/Research) have shown that ''Calciphilopteris'' is the most [basal](/source/Basal_(phylogenetics)) [clade](/source/clade) in the [subfamily](/source/Taxonomic_rank) [Cheilanthoideae](/source/Cheilanthoideae). It is thus far removed from ''[Doryopteris palmata](/source/Doryopteris_palmata)'', the [type species](/source/type_species) of ''Doryopteris''.
''Calciphilopteris'' was [described](/source/Undescribed_taxon) as a new genus in 2010.[Lewis, C.T. & Short, C. (1879).
