**Caio Lucas Fernandes** (born 19 April 1994), known as **Caio Lucas** or just **Caio** [\[ˈkajju\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Portuguese), is a professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays as a [winger](/source/Midfielder#Winger) for [UAE Pro League](/source/UAE_Pro_League) club [Sharjah](/source/Sharjah_FC). Born in Brazil, he represents the [United Arab Emirates](/source/United_Arab_Emirates_national_football_team) at international level.

## Club career

Born in [Araçatuba](/source/Ara%C3%A7atuba), [São Paulo](/source/S%C3%A3o_Paulo_(state)),[3] Caio Lucas started playing football in 2002, aged 8, at local clubs SMER Bosque Araçatuba and [América-SP](/source/Am%C3%A9rica_Futebol_Clube_(SP)). He then played for [São Paulo](/source/S%C3%A3o_Paulo_FC)'s youth teams from 2005 to 2009 but could not become professional, so he left the club and unsuccessfully tried to join rivals [Santos](/source/Santos_FC) and [Palmeiras](/source/SE_Palmeiras) before returning to América. In 2011, when he was prepared to give up on football, he was discovered by a Japanese university that was playing in [Birigui](/source/Birigui), Brazil.[4] Almost aged 17, he moved to Japan that year to enroll in Chiba Kokusai High School in [Kimitsu](/source/Kimitsu), where he played for three years.[3][5]

After his [graduation](/source/Graduation), Caio Lucas joined the [J1 League](/source/J1_League) club, the [Kashima Antlers](/source/Kashima_Antlers) in 2014. In his first professional season, under the coaching of [Toninho Cerezo](/source/Toninho_Cerezo), Caio scored eight goals as Kashima Antlers qualified for the [AFC Champions League](/source/2015_AFC_Champions_League). Moreover, he was named [J. League's Young Player of the Year](/source/J._League_Rookie_of_the_Year) in 2014 and won the [2016 J1 League](/source/2016_J1_League) and [2015 J.League Cup](/source/2015_J.League_Cup).[6] In 2019, following a three-year spell with Emirati club [Al Ain](/source/Al_Ain_FC), with whom he reached the [2018 FIFA Club World Cup Final](/source/2018_FIFA_Club_World_Cup_Final), Caio signed a four-year contract with Portuguese club [Benfica](/source/S.L._Benfica).[7][8]

On 23 January 2020, [Sharjah](/source/Sharjah_FC) signed Caio Lucas from [Benfica](/source/S.L._Benfica) on loan for 18 months.[9]

## International career

Born in Brazil, Caio Lucas became a naturalized Emirati and was called up to the [United Arab Emirates national team](/source/United_Arab_Emirates_national_football_team) for the first time by manager [Paulo Bento](/source/Paulo_Bento) in March 2025 for [2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches](/source/2026_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_(AFC)).[10] He made his debut for the UAE in a 2–0 loss to [Iran](/source/Iran_national_football_team) on 20 March.[11][12]
