The **Caimito Formation** (Tcm)[1] is a [geologic formation](/source/Formation_(geology)) in [Panama](/source/Panama). The [marls](/source/Marl), [sandstones](/source/Sandstone) and [conglomerates](/source/Conglomerate_(geology)) preserve [bivalve](/source/Bivalve) and [gastropod](/source/Gastropod) [fossils](/source/Fossils) dating back to the [Late Oligocene](/source/Late_Oligocene) to [Early Miocene](/source/Early_Miocene) [period](/source/Period_(geology)).[2] The name Caimito was proposed by MacDonald in 1913, named after the Caimito junction in the [Panama Railroad](/source/Panama_Railroad) during the construction of the [Panama Canal](/source/Panama_Canal).[3]
