**Cabrero** is a [city](/source/List_of_cities_in_Chile) and [commune](/source/Communes_of_Chile) in the [Bío Bío Province](/source/B%C3%ADo_B%C3%ADo_Province), [Bío Bío Region](/source/B%C3%ADo_B%C3%ADo_Region), [Chile](/source/Chile).

## History

The city of Cabrero, has its origins in the progressive group of people, which established a station to serve the needs of the inhabitants of several rural properties in the area, and then the arrival of [immigrants](/source/Immigrant) mainly from [Middle East](/source/Middle_East) and [Italy](/source/Italy).[1]

## Demography

According to the 2002 [census](/source/Census) of the [National Statistics Institute](/source/National_Statistics_Institute_(Chile)), Cabrero spans an area of 639.8 km2 (247 sq mi) and has 25,282 inhabitants (12,888 men and 12,394 women), corresponding to 1.25% of total [regional](/source/Region) population and a density of 39.52 inhabitants per km2. A 3.35% (7,245 pop.) Of these, 18,037 (71.3%) lived in [urban areas](/source/Urban_area) and 7,245 (28.7%) in [rural areas](/source/Rural_area). The population grew by 16.5% (3,577 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.[2]

## Administration

As a commune, Cabrero is a third-level [administrative division of Chile](/source/Administrative_division_of_Chile) administered by a [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council), headed by an [alcalde](/source/Alcalde) who is directly elected every four years. The 2008-2012 alcalde is Hasan Sabag Castillo ([PDC](/source/Christian_Democratic_Party)).[3][4]

Within the [electoral divisions of Chile](/source/Electoral_divisions_of_Chile), Cabrero is represented in the [Chamber of Deputies](/source/Chamber_of_Deputies_of_Chile) by Jorge Sabag (PDC) and Frank Sauerbaum ([RN](/source/National_Renewal_(Chile))) as part of the 42nd electoral district, together with [San Fabián](/source/San_Fabi%C3%A1n), [Ñiquén](/source/%C3%91iqu%C3%A9n), [San Carlos](/source/San_Carlos,_Chile), [San Nicolás](/source/San_Nicol%C3%A1s,_Chile), [Ninhue](/source/Ninhue), [Quirihue](/source/Quirihue), [Cobquecura](/source/Cobquecura), [Treguaco](/source/Treguaco), [Portezuelo](/source/Portezuelo,_Chile), [Coelemu](/source/Coelemu), [Ránquil](/source/R%C3%A1nquil), [Quillón](/source/Quill%C3%B3n), [Bulnes](/source/Bulnes,_Chile) and [Yumbel](/source/Yumbel). The commune is represented in the [Senate](/source/Senate_of_Chile) by Alejandro Navarro Brain ([MAS](/source/Broad_Social_Movement)) and Hosain Sabag Castillo (PDC) as part of the 12th senatorial constituency (Biobío-Cordillera).

The Saltos del Laja are about 25 km south of the city of Cabrero.
