== History ==
There have been many artifacts from [prehistory](/source/prehistory) found in Cabrales. [Upper Paleolithic](/source/Upper_Paleolithic) tools made from [stone](/source/Stone_tool) and [bone](/source/Bone_tool) were found in the region, alongside [cave paintings](/source/Cave_painting) and a [burial site](/source/Burial) in Las Canes [cave](/source/cave). [Bronze Age-era](/source/Bronze_Age) [axes](/source/Axe) found in the municipality were given the name "Cabrales axes." There is almost nothing recorded regarding Cabrales during the [Roman conquest of Spain](/source/Roman_conquest_of_the_Iberian_Peninsula).<ref name=":1">{{Cite web |title=Cabrales |url=https://www.facc.info/cabrales/ |access-date=9 June 2024 |website=Federación Asturiana de Concejos |language=es}}</ref>

Cabrales' first mention in the [Middle Ages](/source/Middle_Ages) was when it was noted that the [Moors](/source/Moors) fled the area following their defeat at [Covadonga](/source/Battle_of_Covadonga) in 722. Cabrales was mentioned as a territorial entity in the 12th century, but generally lacked political importance at the time. In the 14th century, Cabrales was officially referred to as a municipality when they were recorded as supporting [Pedro I of Castile](/source/Peter_of_Castile). Later, in the 16th century, the region was ruled by several powerful families, including the Barcena and the González de Buerdo [dynasties](/source/Dynasty).<ref name=":1" />

The region was a site of the [Battle of El Mazucu](/source/Battle_of_El_Mazucu) during the [Spanish Civil War](/source/Spanish_Civil_War) in September 1937. [Francoist](/source/Francoist_Spain) forces overwhelmed the [Republican](/source/Second_Spanish_Republic) army, defeating them; this eventually led to the Republic's retreat from Asturias.<ref>{{Cite book |last=de Blas |first=Juan Antonio |title=La guerra civil en Asturias |publisher=Ediciones Júcar |year=1986 |isbn=8433455397 |edition=2 |pages=369–383 |language=es |trans-title=The Civil War in Asturias}}</ref> Throughout its history, the economy of Cabrales had always been centered around [dairy](/source/Dairy_farming); Cabrales cheese famously comes from the region.<ref name=":1" /> However, in the 1980s, the municipality began a shift towards the [tourism](/source/tourism) and [hotel industries](/source/Hotel), causing the dairy industry in the region to take a backseat to the [tertiary sector](/source/Tertiary_sector_of_the_economy) in terms of [employment](/source/employment).<ref name=":0" />
