'''CORSIKA''' ('''CO'''smic '''R'''ay '''SI'''mulations for ['''KA'''scade](/source/KASCADE)) is a [physics](/source/physics) [computer software](/source/computer_software) for simulation of extensive [air showers](/source/Air_shower_(physics)) induced by [high energy](/source/High_energy_physics) [cosmic ray](/source/cosmic_ray)s, i.e. protons and [atomic nuclei](/source/atomic_nucleus), as well as [Gamma rays](/source/Gamma_Ray) (photons), [electron](/source/electron)s, and [neutrino](/source/neutrino)s. It may be used up to and beyond the highest energies of 100 [E](/source/exa-)[eV](/source/Electronvolt).

In the current version the program utilizes the [hadronic](/source/hadronic) interaction models EPOS,<ref>{{cite journal

}}</ref> [QGSJET](/source/QGSJET), and [DPMJET](/source/DPMJET), which are based on [Gribov-Regge theory](/source/Gribov-Regge_theory), and [SIBYLL](/source/SIBYLL) based on a [minijet](/source/minijet) model for high
energies. Hadronic interactions at lower energies are described either by the [GHEISHA](/source/GHEISHA) module, by [FLUKA](/source/FLUKA), or by the [UrQMD](/source/UrQMD) model. Electromagnetic interactions are treated by an adapted version of the [EGS4](/source/EGS_(program)) code,
customized by including the [Landau–Pomeranchuk–Migdal effect](/source/Landau%E2%80%93Pomeranchuk%E2%80%93Migdal_effect) relevant at higher energies.

It can be used to simulate the generation of [Cherenkov radiation](/source/Cherenkov_radiation), radio emission ([Askaryan radiation](/source/Askaryan_radiation)),<ref>{{cite journal

A complete rewrite of CORSIKA in [C++](/source/C%2B%2B) named CORSIKA 8 is currently work in progress.<ref>{{cite journal
