{{Short description|Protein-coding gene in humans}}
{{Infobox_gene}}
'''Claudin 3''', also known as '''CLDN3''', is a [protein](/source/protein) which in humans is encoded by the ''CLDN3'' [gene](/source/gene).<ref name="entrez">{{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: CLDN3 claudin 3| url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=1365}}</ref> It is a member of the [claudin](/source/claudin) protein family.

[Tight junction](/source/Tight_junction)s represent one mode of cell-to-cell [adhesion](/source/cell_adhesion) in [epithelial](/source/epithelium) or [endothelial](/source/endothelium) cell sheets, forming continuous seals around cells and serving as a physical barrier to prevent solutes and water from passing freely through the [paracellular](/source/paracellular_transport) space. These junctions are composed of sets of continuous networking strands in the outwardly facing [cytoplasm](/source/cytoplasm)ic leaflet, with complementary grooves in the inwardly facing extracytoplasmic leaflet. The protein encoded by this [intron](/source/intron)-less gene, a member of the [claudin](/source/claudin) family, is an [integral membrane protein](/source/integral_membrane_protein) and a component of [tight junction](/source/tight_junction) strands. It is also a low-affinity receptor for [Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin](/source/Clostridium_perfringens_enterotoxin), and shares [amino acid sequence](/source/peptide_sequence) similarity with a putative apoptosis-related protein found in rat.<ref name="entrez" />
