'''CJUL''' was an [English-language](/source/English_language) [Canadian](/source/Canada) [radio station](/source/radio_station) located in [Cornwall](/source/Cornwall%2C_Ontario), [Ontario](/source/Ontario).

Owned and operated by Corus Entertainment, it broadcast on 1220 [kHz](/source/kilohertz) with power of 1,000 [watt](/source/watt)s as a [class C](/source/List_of_broadcast_station_classes) station, using an [omnidirectional antenna](/source/omnidirectional_antenna). The station was on the air from 1945 to 2010.

==History==

The AM radio station in Cornwall originally signed on as CKSF at 1230 kHz on February 15, 1945,<ref>{{cite news |title=CKSF Inaugural Broadcast Set For Six P.M., Thursday |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/daily-standard-freeholder-cksf-inaugural/185507020/ |access-date=November 23, 2025 |newspaper=Daily Standard-Freeholder |date=February 13, 1945 |location=Cornwall, Ontario |page=3 |via=Newspapers.com}}</ref> launched by the [Cornwall Standard Freeholder](/source/Cornwall_Standard_Freeholder). CKSF later moved to 1220 kHz in 1958.<ref>[http://www.broadcasting-history.ca/listing_and_histories/radio/cjss-fm CJSS-FM (began as CKSF) history] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201031215748/http://www.broadcasting-history.ca/listing_and_histories/radio/cjss-fm |date=2020-10-31 }} - [Canadian Communications Foundation](/source/Canadian_Communications_Foundation)</ref> It was later converted to '''[CJSS](/source/CJSS-FM)''', which converted to the 101.9 FM on June 6, 1999.<ref>{{cite news |title=Blaze debuts Sunday on 101.9 FM band |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/standard-freeholder-blaze-debuts-sunday/185524711/ |access-date=November 23, 2025 |newspaper=Standard-Freeholder |date=June 5, 1999 |location=Cornwall, Ontario |page=4 |via=Newspapers.com}}</ref> Subsequently, rather than go dark, the AM 1220 frequency became home to CJUL on November 24, 2000,<ref>{{cite news |last=Jessa |first=Sultan |title=A Jewel of an idea: New radio station debuts on AM band |url=https://www.newspapers.com/article/standard-freeholder-a-jewel-of-an-idea/185525269/ |access-date=November 23, 2025 |newspaper=Standard-Freeholder |date=November 25, 2000 |location=Cornwall, Ontario |page=3 |via=Newspapers.com}}</ref><ref>[http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2000/DB2000-251.htm Decision CRTC 2000-251],

On November 19, 2001, the [CRTC](/source/Canadian_Radio-television_and_Telecommunications_Commission) approved the application by Corus Entertainment Inc. to purchase Tri-Co Broadcasting Ltd. (519957 Ontario Ltd.) from the Émard family. Tri-Co was owner of CJUL, [CFLG-FM](/source/CFLG-FM) and [CJSS-FM](/source/CJSS-FM).<ref>[http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2001/db2001-703.htm Decision CRTC 2001-703],

The station later changed to a combination [talk radio](/source/talk_radio)/[oldies](/source/oldies) format branded as '''AM1220, Today's News, Yesterday's Hits'''. Half of the station's weekday broadcast was featured talk programming including newsmagazines ''John Bolton's Cornwall Today'' and ''Cornwall@5''. The nationally syndicated ''Adler On-Line'' with [Charles Adler](/source/Charles_Adler_(broadcaster)) aired from 3pm to 5pm local time. The remainder of the day, the station played oldies from the 1960s and 1970s.

On August 18, 2010, Corus announced it was closing the station effective immediately, but simultaneously announced an increase to the frequency and duration of newscasts on sister stations [CJSS-FM](/source/CJSS-FM) and [CFLG-FM](/source/CFLG-FM).<ref>[http://www.thecornwalldaily.com/news/local/corus-cornwall-expands-local-news-coverage Corus Cornwall Expands Local News Coverage] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100823215757/http://www.thecornwalldaily.com/news/local/corus-cornwall-expands-local-news-coverage/ |date=2010-08-23 }}, ''The Cornwall Daily'' (Corus-owned news website), August 18, 2010</ref><ref>[http://cornwallfreenews.com/2010/08/am-1220-turns-off-the-juice-long-time-cornwall-ontario-station-is-no-more-breaking-news-august-18-2010 AM 1220 Turns off the Juice], ''cornwallfreenews.com'', August 18, 2010</ref><ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_PvQlDCHx8/ 1220 CJUL Cornwall, ON - Final transmission loop] - [YouTube](/source/YouTube)</ref><ref>[https://www.cornwallseawaynews.com/2010/08/29/a-piece-of-history-is-gone-in-cornwall/ A piece of history is gone in Cornwall], ''Cornwall Seaway News'', August 29, 2010</ref>

No specific reason for closing the station was given, although the station was the only AM station in the Cornwall market; it was also the third Corus-owned AM station to have closed down in 2010, following the closures of [CINF](/source/CINF) and [CINW](/source/CINW) in Montreal in January.

As a consequence to CJUL's closedown, [St. Catharines](/source/St._Catharines)' station [CHSC](/source/CHSC_(AM)) could be heard after sunset. This availability was short-lived; although CHSC was to have left the air upon the expiration of its licence on August 31, 2010, it remained on the air after being issued a stay from the Federal Court of Canada until September 30, when its appeal was denied. On October 12, 2010, Corus received approval to revoke CJUL's licence.<ref>[http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2010/2010-751.htm Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2010-751],
