**Line 10** is a [Luxembourgish](/source/Luxembourg) [railway line](/source/Railway_line) connecting [Luxembourg City](/source/Luxembourg_City) to the centre and north of the country, as well as on to [Liège](/source/Li%C3%A8ge), in [Belgium](/source/Belgium). The terminus at the southern end is [Luxembourg railway station](/source/Luxembourg_railway_station), whilst the terminals at the northern end are [Diekirch](/source/Diekirch_railway_station), [Wiltz](/source/Wiltz_railway_station), [Troisvierges](/source/Troisvierges_railway_station) and [Liège](/source/Li%C3%A8ge-Guillemins_railway_station). It is designated and predominantly operated by the [Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois](/source/Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9_Nationale_des_Chemins_de_Fer_Luxembourgeois) (CFL).

## History

On 21 July 1862, the [Chemins de fer de l'Est](/source/Chemins_de_fer_de_l'Est) opened the line section from [Luxembourg railway station](/source/Luxembourg_railway_station) to [Ettelbruck railway station](/source/Ettelbruck_railway_station) to commercial traffic. On 15 December 1866, the line was extended to [Troisvierges railway station](/source/Troisvierges_railway_station) before reaching the Belgian border and Gouvy railway station on 20 February 1867.[1]

The line was electrified in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with Luxembourg also funding the electrification and upgrade of the Belgian Line 42 to Liège.[2] During a planned closure of the line in August 2022, the roof of the Schieburg Tunnel collapsed.[3] The line was therefore closed for over a year while the tunnel was repaired,[4] substantially increasing journey times in the region.[5]

## Route

The route of CFL Line 10 starts in [Liege](/source/Li%C3%A8ge) and heads east across the [Meuse](/source/Meuse), before arriving in [Angleur](/source/Angleur) and heading south alongside the [Ourthe](/source/Ourthe). The route then heads east along the [Ambléve](/source/Ambl%C3%A8ve_(river)) until it reaches Coo, then heading south along the Glain until it reaches Bovigny, then heading south to [Gouvy](/source/Gouvy), then crossing the [Belgium-Luxembourg border](/source/Belgium-Luxembourg_border). The route then follows the Woltz river, and then the [Clerve](/source/Clerve). From [Kautenbach](/source/Kautenbach), the line follows the [Wiltz](/source/Wiltz_(river)), with a branch following the [Wiltz](/source/Wiltz_(river)) to [Wiltz](/source/Wiltz). Near [Goebelsmuhle](/source/Goebelsmuhle), the Wiltz and [Sauer](/source/Sauer) converge, and the line then follows the [Sauer](/source/Sauer). At [Ettelbruck](/source/Ettelbruck), a spur goes to [Diekirch](/source/Diekirch) along the [Sauer](/source/Sauer), and the main line follows the [Alzette](/source/Alzette) to [Luxembourg](/source/Luxembourg_City).
