**Charles Murray Turpin** (March 4, 1878 – June 4, 1946) was a [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) member of the [U.S. House of Representatives](/source/U.S._House_of_Representatives) from [Pennsylvania](/source/Pennsylvania).[1][2]

## Biography

Turpin was born in [Kingston, Pennsylvania](/source/Kingston%2C_Pennsylvania) on March 4, 1878, and attended the [Wyoming Seminary](/source/Wyoming_Seminary) in Kingston.[3][4]

He served as a corporal in the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army) during the [Spanish–American War](/source/Spanish%E2%80%93American_War) in Company F of the Ninth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was a member of the [Pennsylvania National Guard](/source/Pennsylvania_National_Guard) from 1896 to 1901, rising to the rank of captain.[5]

He was employed as a [carpenter](/source/Carpenter), grocery clerk, and a [steamboat](/source/Steamboat) captain before graduating from the dental department of the [University of Pennsylvania](/source/University_of_Pennsylvania) at [Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphia), [Pennsylvania](/source/Pennsylvania) in 1904. After graduation, he commenced the practice of [dentistry](/source/Dentistry) in Kingston in 1905.[6]

He served as a member of the board of education from 1916 to 1922, burgess of Kingston from 1922 to 1926, and [prothonotary](/source/Prothonotary) of [Luzerne County, Pennsylvania](/source/Luzerne_County%2C_Pennsylvania) from 1926 to 1929.[7]

Turpin was elected as a Republican to the [Seventy-first](/source/71st_United_States_Congress) Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of [John J. Casey](/source/John_J._Casey). He was reelected to the [Seventy-second](/source/72nd_United_States_Congress), [Seventy-third](/source/73rd_United_States_Congress), and [Seventy-fourth](/source/74th_United_States_Congress) Congresses. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in [1936](/source/1936_United_States_House_election).[8][9]

He was appointed assistant chief clerk of the Luzerne County Assessor's Office in [Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania](/source/Wilkes-Barre%2C_Pennsylvania).[10]

## Death and interment

Turpin died in Kingston and is buried in Forty Fort Cemetery, [Forty Fort, Pennsylvania](/source/Forty_Fort%2C_Pennsylvania).[11][12]
