'''Byron Froese''' (born March 12, 1991) is a Canadian professional [ice hockey](/source/ice_hockey) player for [Lokomotiv Yaroslavl](/source/Lokomotiv_Yaroslavl) of the [Kontinental Hockey League](/source/Kontinental_Hockey_League) (KHL). Froese was selected in the fourth round, 119th overall, by [Chicago Blackhawks](/source/Chicago_Blackhawks) in the [2009 NHL entry draft](/source/2009_NHL_entry_draft). Froese has previously played for [Toronto Maple Leafs](/source/Toronto_Maple_Leafs), [Tampa Bay Lightning](/source/Tampa_Bay_Lightning), [Montreal Canadiens](/source/Montreal_Canadiens), [Calgary Flames](/source/Calgary_Flames) and [Vegas Golden Knights](/source/Vegas_Golden_Knights) of the [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League) (NHL).

==Playing career==
On May 31, 2011, the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL signed Froese to a three-year entry-level contract.<ref>{{cite web| url = http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2011/05/31/blackhawks-sign-three-prospects-to-contracts/ | title = Blackhawks sign three prospects to contract | work = [CBS Sports](/source/CBS_Sports) | date = 2011-05-31 | access-date = 2011-05-31}}</ref> He split the majority of his contract between affiliates, the [Rockford IceHogs](/source/Rockford_IceHogs) of the [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League) and the [Toledo Walleye](/source/Toledo_Walleye) of the ECHL.

In the final year of his entry-level deal with the Blackhawks in the [2013–14](/source/2013%E2%80%9314_AHL_season) season, he was reassigned from the IceHogs to Cincinnati Cyclones, where he largely contributed to their [Kelly Cup](/source/Kelly_Cup) final appearance with 25 points in 23 games. As a free agent from the Blackhawks, Froese opted to remain with the Cyclones, signing a one-year deal on August 14, 2014.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.facebook.com/cincinnaticyclones/photos/p.10153099601820353/10153099601820353/?type=1&theater | title = Cyclones re-sign MacDonald, Froese | publisher = [Facebook](/source/Facebook) | date = 2014-08-14 | access-date = 2014-08-14 | author = Cincinnati Cyclones | author-link = Cincinnati Cyclones }}</ref>

The Cyclones loaned Froese to the [San Antonio Rampage](/source/San_Antonio_Rampage) to begin the [2014–15](/source/2014%E2%80%9315_AHL_season) season. After he was returned to Cincinnati, he was later loaned to the Toronto Marlies. In a successful stint with the Marlies, Froese was signed for the remainder of the season by the Marlies on January 7, 2015.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://twitter.com/TorontoMarlies/status/552922698444464128 | title = Marlies have signed Byron Froese | publisher = [Twitter](/source/Twitter) | author = Toronto Marlies | date = 2015-01-07 | access-date = 2015-01-07| author-link = Toronto Marlies }}</ref>

On July 3, 2015, Froese was signed by the Marlies parent affiliate, Toronto Maple Leafs, to a two-year contract.<ref>{{cite web| url = http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=773847 | title = Maple Leafs sign Byron Forese to two-year contract | publisher = [Toronto Maple Leafs](/source/Toronto_Maple_Leafs) | date = 2015-07-03 | access-date = 2015-07-03}}</ref> Early into the [2015–16](/source/2015%E2%80%9316_NHL_season) season, Froese received his first recall from the Marlies to the NHL on October 23, 2015. On the following day, Froese made his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs in a 5-3 defeat to the [Montreal Canadiens](/source/Montreal_Canadiens). On December 19, 2015, Froese scored his first NHL goal against the Kings.<ref>{{cite web| url =https://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/mtl-vs-tor/2015/10/24/2015020108 | title = Canadiens stay perfect by defeating Maple Leafs | publisher = [National Hockey League](/source/National_Hockey_League) | date = 2015-10-24 | access-date = 2015-10-24}}</ref> Froese would finish the season with just 5 points in 56 games, but he earned high praise from both coach [Mike Babcock](/source/Mike_Babcock) and the media for his great defensive play.

In the [2016–17](/source/2016%E2%80%9317_NHL_season) season, on February 27, 2017, Froese was traded by the Maple Leafs to the [Tampa Bay Lightning](/source/Tampa_Bay_Lightning) along with a conditional second round draft choice in [2017](/source/2017_NHL_Entry_Draft) in exchange for centre [Brian Boyle](/source/Brian_Boyle).<ref>{{Cite web| url = https://www.nhl.com/lightning/news/tampa-bay-lightning-acquire-byron-froese-conditional-second-round-pick-in-2017-nhl-draft-from-toronto-maple-leafs-in-exchange-for-brian-boyle/c-287181798 | title = Bolts acquire Froese, 2nd round pick from Toronto for Boyle | publisher = [Tampa Bay Lightning](/source/Tampa_Bay_Lightning) | date = 2017-02-27 | access-date = 2017-02-27}}</ref>

On July 1, 2017, having left the Lightning as a free agent, Froese agreed to a two-year contract with Montreal Canadiens, with the final season of his deal played on a one-way basis.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.nhl.com/canadiens/news/the-canadiens-have-agreed-to-terms-on-a-two-year-contract-with-byron-froese/c-290252172 | title = Canadiens agree to terms with Byron Froese on a two-year contract | publisher = [Montreal Canadiens](/source/Montreal_Canadiens) | date = 2017-07-01 | access-date = 2017-07-01}}</ref> In the [2017–18](/source/2017%E2%80%9318_NHL_season) season, Froese was initially assigned to inaugural AHL affiliate, the [Laval Rocket](/source/Laval_Rocket). As [captain](/source/Captain_(ice_hockey)) of the Rocket, he appeared in just 13 games with the club before he was recalled to the Canadiens on November 8, 2017.<ref>{{cite tweet |user=RocketLaval |number=928110722135019520 |date=November 7, 2017 |title=@CanadiensMTL recalled forward Byron Froese from Laval tonight. In the following [2018–19](/source/2018%E2%80%9319_AHL_season) season, Froese was re-assigned to the Rocket and selected as [captain](/source/Captain_(ice_hockey)).<ref>{{cite news| url = https://montrealgazette.com/sports/hockey/nhl/hockey-inside-out/byron-froese-enters-second-season-as-laval-rocket-captain | title = Froese enters second season as Laval Rocket captain | newspaper = [Montreal Gazette](/source/Montreal_Gazette) | date = 2018-10-04 | access-date = 2018-10-04}}</ref> He scored 30 points through 46 games for the Rocket before he was traded by the Canadiens, alongside [David Schlemko](/source/David_Schlemko), to the [Philadelphia Flyers](/source/Philadelphia_Flyers) in exchange for [Dale Weise](/source/Dale_Weise) and [Christian Folin](/source/Christian_Folin) on February 9, 2019.<ref>{{cite web| url = https://www.nhl.com/flyers/news/flyers-acquire-defenseman-david-schlemko-forward-byron-froese-from-montreal--philadelphia-flyers/c-304651558 | title = Flyers acquire David Schlemko, Byron Froese from Canadiens | publisher = [Philadelphia Flyers](/source/Philadelphia_Flyers) | date = 2019-02-09 | access-date = 2019-02-09}}</ref>

At the end his contracted tenure with the Golden Knights, Froese left as a free agent and signed his first contract abroad by agreeing to a one-year contract with Russian club, [Lokomotiv Yaroslavl](/source/Lokomotiv_Yaroslavl) of the [KHL](/source/Kontinental_Hockey_League), on July 15, 2024.<ref>{{citeweb| url = https://hclokomotiv.ru/article/8916 | title = Lokomotiv sign Canadian import Byron Froese | publisher = [Lokomotiv Yaroslavl](/source/Lokomotiv_Yaroslavl) | date = July 15, 2024 | accessdate = July 15, 2024 | language = Russian }}</ref> On May 21, 2025, Lokomotiv, with Froese in the lineup, defeated [Traktor Chelyabinsk](/source/Traktor_Chelyabinsk) four games to one in the championship series and became the [Gagarin Cup](/source/Gagarin_Cup) winner - for the first time in the club's history.<ref>{{citeweb| url = https://hclokomotiv.ru/article/9308 | title = Lokomotiv is Gagarin Cup winner | publisher = [Lokomotiv Yaroslavl](/source/Lokomotiv_Yaroslavl) | date = May 21, 2025 | language = Russian }}</ref> A year later on the same day, Froese helped Lokomotiv win its second title in a row - this time they beat [Ak Bars Kazan](/source/Ak_Bars_Kazan) 4-2 in the Cup finals.
