'''Buttwil''' is a [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_Switzerland) in the district of [Muri](/source/Muri_(district)) in the [canton of Aargau](/source/canton_of_Aargau) in [Switzerland](/source/Switzerland).

The village is {{convert|2|km|mi|sp=us}} west of [Muri](/source/Muri%2C_Aargau).

==History==
Buttwil is first mentioned in 1160 as ''Butwile''.<ref name=HDS/> From its founding the [Benedictine](/source/Benedictine) [Muri Abbey](/source/Muri_Abbey) possessed extensive real estate in the village. With the conquest of Aargau in 1415, the [high court](/source/High%2C_middle_and_low_justice) right, which had been held by the [Habsburgs](/source/House_of_Habsburg), went to the [Swiss Confederation](/source/Old_Swiss_Confederacy). The low court right remained at the Abbey.

The chapel of St. James was built in 1666 and was a [chapel of ease](/source/chapel_of_ease) in the Muri [parish](/source/parish).

This former farming village showed a steady population decline around 1950. This was followed by a sharp increase since 1970, due to the virtually fog-free area and the short commutes on the train to [Zürich](/source/Z%C3%BCrich) and [Lucerne](/source/Lucerne). Since 1984, there has been a bus connection to Muri.<ref name=HDS/>
