# Butts County Courthouse

The **Butts County Courthouse** is an historic former government building designed by [Bruce & Morgan](/source/Bruce_%26_Morgan) and constructed in 1898 by J.H. McKenzie & Son in [Jackson](/source/Jackson,_Georgia), [Butts County, Georgia](/source/Butts_County,_Georgia), [United States](/source/United_States).

The courthouse is located on West Third Street ([US 23](/source/U.S._Route_23_in_Georgia)/[GA 42](/source/Georgia_State_Route_42)/[GA 16](/source/Georgia_State_Route_16)) and North Mulberry Street, across from the west end of the overlap with [GA 36](/source/Georgia_State_Route_36) (South Mulberry Street). It is also located on West Second Street and North Oak Street. In simple terms, the town square.

It was added to the [National Register of Historic Places](/source/National_Register_of_Historic_Places) on September 18, 1980.[1] In 2019, courthouse functions ceased in the building, and renovations began in order to re-open as the Economic Development and Tourism Center.[2]

Its design seems to be a less elaborate version of the [Monroe County Courthouse](/source/Monroe_County_Courthouse_(Forsyth,_Georgia)) designed by Bruce & Morgan in 1896. It is [High Victorian](/source/High_Victorian_architecture) in style.[3] The courthouse hosts a confederate monument.[4]
