'''''Butomus''''' is the only known [genus](/source/genus) in the plant [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) '''Butomaceae''', native to [Europe](/source/Europe) and [Asia](/source/Asia). It is considered invasive in some parts of the United States.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/terrestrialplants/herbaceous/floweringrush.html|title=Flowering rush - Invasive species: Minnesota DNR|website=www.dnr.state.mn.us|language=en|access-date=2018-02-06}}</ref>

== Taxonomy ==
The '''Butomaceae''' family has been recognized by most [taxonomists](/source/taxonomists) as a [plant family](/source/plant_family); it is sometimes called the "flowering-rush family".

The [APG II system](/source/APG_II_system), of 2003 (unchanged from the [APG system](/source/APG_system), 1998), also recognizes such a family, and places it in the [order](/source/order_(biology)) [Alismatales](/source/Alismatales), in the clade [monocots](/source/monocots).
At the [ranks](/source/rank_(botany)) of family and order, this is the same placement as in the [Cronquist system](/source/Cronquist_system). However, Cronquist assumed a much smaller order and assigned the order to subclass [Alismatidae](/source/Alismatidae), in class [Liliopsida](/source/Liliopsida) [=monocotyledons].

== Species ==
The family counts one species, ''[Butomus umbellatus](/source/Butomus_umbellatus)'', or two according to some authorities.
