**Butjadingen** (German pronunciation: [\[bʊtˈjaːdɪŋən\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Standard_German)) is a [peninsula](/source/Peninsula) and [municipality](/source/Municipality) in the [Wesermarsch](/source/Wesermarsch) district, in [Lower Saxony](/source/Lower_Saxony), [Germany](/source/Germany).

## Geography

Butjadingen is situated on the German [North Sea](/source/North_Sea) coast. It is bordered on the west and southwest by the [Jade River](/source/Jade_(river)) and the east by the [Weser River](/source/Weser_River). It forms the northern part of the Wesermarsch district and has a rather low population. The political borough of Butjadingen adjoins [Nordenham](/source/Nordenham) which geographically is also part of the peninsula Butjadingen.

The peninsula was formed during the [Middle Ages](/source/Middle_Ages) when huge [floods](/source/Flood) created today's North Sea coastlines. After the [Second Marcellus Flood](/source/Saint_Marcellus'_flood_(1362)) on January 13, 1362 (which occurred around the day of [Marcelli Pontificis](/source/Pope_Marcellus_I)) Butjadingen temporarily became an island.

Its name is derived from [Frisian](/source/Frisian_languages) "Buten" (=outside) and "Jade" and thus means *the lands on the other side of the Jade River*.

In front of the peninsula is the [Wadden Sea](/source/Wadden_Sea) which stretches between the Jade's and the Weser's mouths about 23 kilometers to the northwest beyond the [Mellum](/source/Mellum) island. It is part of the *Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer* (Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park), one of three German [Wadden Sea National Parks](/source/Wadden_Sea_National_Parks).

## Economy

[Agriculture](/source/Agriculture) and [tourism](/source/Tourism) constitute the bulk of its economic activity. The main tourist sites are the villages of [Tossens](/source/Tossens), [Burhave](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Burhave&action=edit&redlink=1), and [Eckwarden](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eckwarden&action=edit&redlink=1). There are [ferries](/source/Ferry) across the Weser from Nordenham to [Bremerhaven](/source/Bremerhaven) and (during summer months) across the Jade from Eckwarderhörne to [Wilhelmshaven](/source/Wilhelmshaven). In Nordenham there is a train station with several connections per day to [Bremen](/source/Bremen_(city)).
