Located in northern Burundi, Butanyerera borders the Burundian provinces of [Bujumbura](/source/Bujumbura_Province), [Gitega](/source/Gitega_Province) and [Buhumuza](/source/Buhumuza) to the west, south and east respectively, and [Rwanda](/source/Rwanda)'s [Southern](/source/Southern_Province%2C_Rwanda) and [Eastern](/source/Eastern_Province%2C_Rwanda) provinces to the northwest and northeast respectively.
