Aphroditopolis is located 38 miles upstream from [Cairo](/source/Cairo), near the ruins of [Memphis, Egypt](/source/Memphis%2C_Egypt). All that remains of the city is mounds and ruins, which were excavated by [Matthew Flinders Petrie](/source/Flinders_Petrie).

The city was known as ''Tpyhwt'' during [pharaonic](/source/Pharaoh) times, ''Βούσιρις'' (Busiris) in [Hellenistic](/source/Hellenistic) times, Aphroditopolis during the [Byzantine](/source/Byzantine) and [Roman Empire](/source/Roman_Empire)s, Petpeh in [Coptic](/source/Coptic_language), and since the Islamic conquest as [Atfih](/source/Atfih).
