# Bushtyno

**Bushtyno** (Ukrainian: Буштино ˈbuʃtɪno; Hungarian: *Bustyaháza*; Romanian: *Bustea*; Slovak: *Buštín*; Yiddish: בישטינא) is a [rural settlement](/source/Populated_places_in_Ukraine#Rural_settlements) in [Tiachiv Raion](/source/Tiachiv_Raion), [Zakarpattia Oblast](/source/Zakarpattia_Oblast), western [Ukraine](/source/Ukraine).[1] Bushtyno is located in a small valley where the [Tereblia](/source/Tereblia_(river)) and the [Tisza](/source/Tisza) rivers meet.[2] The town's population was 8,506 as of the [2001 Ukrainian census](/source/2001_Ukrainian_census).[1] Population:

## History

The settlement was first mentioned in 1373 as the village of Bushta.[2] In 1910, the settlement belonged to the [Máramaros County](/source/M%C3%A1ramaros_County) of the [Kingdom of Hungary](/source/Kingdom_of_Hungary). At the time the settlement was known as **Bustyaháza**, a [Hungarian](/source/Hungarian_language) variant of the name, and contained a total of 2,056 inhabitants, the majority of which were [Ruthenians](/source/Ruthenians).[3]

In 1930, the settlement's [Jewish](/source/Jews) population was 1,042.[4] Known for its wood industry, during the period of existence of [Carpatho-Ukraine](/source/Carpatho-Ukraine) Bushtyno housed the State Forestry Directorate.[5]

In 1957, Bushtyna was granted the status of an [urban-type settlement](/source/Urban-type_settlement).[1] In 1995, the settlement was renamed from **Bushtyna** (Ukrainian: Буштина) to the current "Bushtyno."[6] On 26 January 2024, a new law entered into force which abolished the status of an urban-type settlement, and Bushtyno became a rural settlement.[7]

Rabbi [Mordechai Leifer](/source/Mordechai_Leifer) of [Nadvorna](/source/Nadvirna) is buried there.[8]

## Geography

The village is located in the eastern part of [Zakarpattia Oblast](/source/Zakarpattia_Oblast), at the confluence of the Terebli River into the [Tisza](/source/Tisza), next to the [Gutin Mountains](/source/Gutin_Mountains). The district center [Tiachiv](/source/Tiachiv) is located 8 kilometers from Bushtyno. The territory of the village has a flat relief.[9]

The climate is temperate continental with warm summers and mild winters. Southwest winds prevail throughout the year.[10]

The national highway [Mukachevo](/source/Mukachevo) - [Rohatyn](/source/Rohatyn) and the [Chop](/source/Chop,_Ukraine) - [Solotvino](/source/Solotvyno) railway pass through the settlement, connecting the village with other settlements in Ukraine and other countries. The village borders the villages of Yablunivka, Steblivka, Vonihove, Ruske Pole, Novobarovota and the village of Vyshkovo.[11][12]

The village is inhabited by Ukrainians, Hungarians, Russians, Romanians, Roma, Slovaks, Germans, etc.[13]
