It was built in 1428 for [Thomas Montacute, 4th Earl of Salisbury](/source/Thomas_Montacute%2C_4th_Earl_of_Salisbury). It was also the home of [Sir John Marsham, 1st Baronet](/source/Sir_John_Marsham%2C_1st_Baronet).

In 1881, a [hydrotherapeutic](/source/hydrotherapeutic) institute was opened in its 250 acres of parkland.<ref>'Bushey Hydrotherapeutic Establishment'.
