# Burton Hecht

**Burton Glaser Hecht** (born December 30, 1927) is an American lawyer and politician from [New York](/source/New_York_(state)).

## Life

Hecht was born on December 30, 1927, in New York City to Charlotte Glaser and Robert Hecht. He attended Public School No. 86 and [DeWitt Clinton High School](/source/DeWitt_Clinton_High_School). He graduated from [New York University](/source/New_York_University) and [New York University School of Law](/source/New_York_University_School_of_Law).[1] He married Isabel M. (1930–2000), and they had three children.[2]

He entered politics as a [Democrat](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)).

He was a member of the [New York State Assembly](/source/New_York_State_Assembly) from 1963 to 1976, sitting in the [174th](/source/174th_New_York_State_Legislature), [175th](/source/175th_New_York_State_Legislature), [176th](/source/176th_New_York_State_Legislature), [177th](/source/177th_New_York_State_Legislature), [178th](/source/178th_New_York_State_Legislature), [179th](/source/179th_New_York_State_Legislature), [180th](/source/180th_New_York_State_Legislature) and [181st New York State Legislatures](/source/181st_New_York_State_Legislature). He was Chairman of the Committee on Claims in 1967 and 1968; and Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means in 1975 and 1976. In November 1976, he was elected to the [New York City Civil Court](/source/New_York_City_Civil_Court).

In December 1985, Hecht was injured in a car accident on the [New York State Thruway](/source/New_York_State_Thruway) while returning from [Albany](/source/Albany,_New_York) to [New York City](/source/New_York_City). The driver of the car, Acting Supreme Court Justice [Archie A. Gorfinkel](/source/Archie_A._Gorfinkel), died from his injuries. Hecht was brought to the Good Samaritan Hospital in [Suffern](/source/Suffern,_New_York), and recovered.[3]

In November 1988, Hecht was elected to the [New York Supreme Court](/source/New_York_Supreme_Court) (12th D.).[4]

After retiring from the bench, he moved to [Delray Beach, Florida](/source/Delray_Beach,_Florida).
