**Burstock** is a village and [civil parish](/source/Civil_parishes_in_England) in west [Dorset](/source/Dorset), [England](/source/England), 5 miles (8.0 km) south of [Crewkerne](/source/Crewkerne). In the [2011 census](/source/United_Kingdom_Census_2011) the parish had 59 dwellings,[2] 49 households and a population of 120.[1]

In 1086 Burstock was recorded in the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book) as 'Bureuuinestoch',[3] meaning a farm ('stoc') owned by either 'Burgwine' (a man) or 'Burgwynn' (a woman).[4] It had 12 households, 8 acres of meadow and 3 [ploughlands](/source/Ploughland). It was in [Whitchurch Canonicorum Hundred](/source/Whitchurch_Canonicorum_Hundred), the lord was William Malbank and the [tenant-in-chief](/source/Tenant-in-chief) was Earl Hugh of Chester.[5]

Before the [Dissolution of the Monasteries](/source/Dissolution_of_the_Monasteries) in the mid 16th century, Burstock was closely associated with the [Cistercian monks](/source/Cistercians) at nearby [Forde Abbey](/source/Forde_Abbey); at Whetham, in the north of the parish, the abbey developed a mill, and in 1316 the Abbot became Burstock's lord of the manor.[4]
