**Burgos**, officially the **Municipality of Burgos** ([Ilocano](/source/Ilocano_language): *Ili ti Burgos*; [Tagalog](/source/Tagalog_language): *Bayan ng Burgos*), is a [municipality](/source/Municipality_of_the_Philippines) in the [province](/source/Philippine_Province) of [Isabela](/source/Isabela_(province)), [Philippines](/source/Philippines). According to the 2024 census, it has a population of 26,729 people.[6]

## Etymology

The town derived its name from the [Ilocano](/source/Ilocano_people) martyr Fr. [José Burgos](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Burgos) who noted that the majority of the population is composed of [Ilocanos](/source/Ilocano_people).[1]

## History

The Burgos town was established on May 18, 1967 pursuant to *Republic Act No. 4877*. The law sought to detach specific barrios from the municipalities of [Gamu](/source/Gamu), and [Aurora](/source/Aurora%2C_Isabela) becoming a new municipality with its own set of officials.[7]

## Geography

Burgos is 32 kilometres (20 mi) southwest of the provincial capital [Ilagan](/source/Ilagan), and 413.54 kilometres (256.96 mi) north of capital [Manila](/source/Manila).

### Barangays

Burgos is politically subdivided into 14 [barangays](/source/Barangay). [8]. Each barangay consists of [puroks](/source/Purok) while some have [sitios](/source/Sitios).

Only one barangay is considered urban (highlighted in **bold**).[9]

In the 2024 census, the population of Burgos was 26,729 people,[16] with a density of 370 inhabitants per square kilometre or 960 inhabitants per square mile.

Economic activities mainly consists of farming. It is one of the highest rice and corn producer among towns of [Isabela](/source/Isabela_(province)) province.

## Government

### Local government

As a municipality in the Province of Isabela, government officials at the provincial and municipal levels are voted by the town. The provincial government has political jurisdiction over most local transactions of the municipal government.

The municipality of Burgos is governed by a mayor, designated as its local chief executive, and by a municipal council as its legislative body in accordance with the Local Government Code. The mayor, vice mayor, and the municipal councilors are elected directly by the people through an election held every three years.

Barangays are also headed by elected officials: [Barangay Captain](/source/Barangay_Captain), [Barangay Council](/source/Sangguniang_Barangay), whose members are called [Barangay Councilors](/source/Barangay_Kagawad). The barangays have SK federation which represents the barangay, headed by SK chairperson and whose members are called SK councilors. All officials are also elected every three years.

## Education
