## Lakes

Waiwhakareke (Horseshoe) Lake

Waiwhakareke, or Horseshoe Lake (neither name is [official](/source/New_Zealand_Geographic_Board))[10] is a 3 ha (7.4 acres) [peat](/source/Peat) lake in the 65.5 ha (162 acres) Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park, bought by [Hamilton City Council](/source/Hamilton_City_Council_(New_Zealand)) in 1975.[11] It is in the south west corner of Burbush.[12] Like most of Waikato it would have been inundated by a flood of water and [ignimbrite](/source/Ignimbrite) debris from [Lake Taupō](/source/Oruanui_eruption) about 22,000 years ago, followed by further events,[13] including the 232 CE ± 10 [Hatepe eruption](/source/Hatepe_eruption) and flood.[14] A peat bog formed in the hollow and restricted drainage. Work to restore the natural qualities of the park began in 2004. The lake drains north into a stream, which has been cut to [Lake Rotokauri](/source/Lake_Rotokauri).[4] [Willows](/source/Willow) have been removed from around the lake, but the introduced species of [catfish](/source/Catfish), [rudd](/source/Scardinius), [brown trout](/source/Brown_trout) and [mosquito fish](/source/Mosquitofish) are common.[15] In 2026 a [pest-exclusion fence](/source/Pest-exclusion_fence) is being built around the Park.[16]
