The Bungala flows past the town of [Yankalilla](/source/Yankalilla%2C_South_Australia), and empties into the [Yankalilla Bay](/source/Yankalilla_Bay), part of the Gulf of St Vincent, near [Normanville](/source/Normanville%2C_South_Australia). The river descends 225 metres (738 ft) over its 13-kilometre (8.1 mi) [course](/source/Watercourse).[1] The [wetlands](/source/Wetlands) surrounding the river are classified as [brackish](/source/Brackish) wetlands, with the [estuary](/source/Estuary) also having a brackish wetland system, and [coastal dunes](/source/Coastal_dunes) along the neighbouring stretch of coast.[2] The Yankalilla Bay Catchment Action Group and the Normanville Heritage Sand Dune Rehabilitation Group are [environmental groups](/source/Environmental_group) aiming to preserving and restoring the river's natural state, whilst maintaining its use by the surrounding community. The latter are concerned primarily with Yankalilla and further inland sections of the river,[3] and the former are concerned with the [estuary](/source/Estuary) and [coastal](/source/Coastal) section of the river.[4] ## Etymology The river's name is derived from an [Aboriginal](/source/Aboriginal_Australians) name adopted for a house built on section 1171 in the [Hundred of Yankalilla](/source/Hundred_of_Yankalilla) by Eli Butterworth in the 1860s.
