The [Bulimba Branch railway line](/source/Bulimba_Branch_railway_line) was built in 1897 to support the wharves and industries located on the western bank of the Bulimba Reach in Newstead, Teneriffe and New Farm.<ref>{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article3606299 |title=RAILWAY EXTENSION. |newspaper=[The Brisbane Courier](/source/The_Brisbane_Courier) |date=23 July 1895 |accessdate=27 January 2015 |page=6 |publisher=National Library of Australia}}</ref>

Former wharves in the Bulimba Reach include:<ref>{{Citation | author1=Bartlett, George S | author2=Bartlett, Aubrey George | author3=Archive CD Books Australia | title=Greater Brisbane area atlases and street directories : set of 4 1931-c1948 | publication-date=2009 | publisher=Archive CD Books Australia | isbn=978-1-74222-332-2 }}</ref>

*[Teneriffe ferry wharf](/source/Teneriffe_ferry_wharf) (western bank)
*[Bulimba ferry wharf](/source/Bulimba_ferry_wharf) (eastern bank)
The [CityCat](/source/CityCat) services all of these ferry terminals along the [Brisbane River](/source/Brisbane_River).<ref>{{Queensland Timetables|CityCat}}</ref> A cross-river ferry service also operates between Bulimba and Hawthorne ferry wharves.<ref>{{Queensland Timetables|Bulimba}}</ref>

There are many landmarks along the Bulimba Reach, including (from upstream to downstream):
* the heritage-listed [Brisbane Powerhouse](/source/Brisbane_Powerhouse), New Farm (western bank)
* [Lourdes Hill College](/source/Lourdes_Hill_College), Hawthorne (eastern bank)
* the heritage-listed former [CSR Refinery](/source/CSR_Refinery%2C_New_Farm), New Farm (western bank)
* the heritage-listed house [Amity](/source/Amity%2C_New_Farm), New Farm (western bank)
* the heritage-listed [Australian Estates No. 2 Store](/source/Australian_Estates_No._2_Store), Teneriffe (western bank)
* the heritage-listed [Hawthorne ferry wharf](/source/Hawthorne_ferry_wharf), Hawthorne (eastern bank)
* the heritage-listed former [Mactaggarts Woolstore](/source/Mactaggarts_Woolstore), Teneriffe (eastern bank)
* the heritage-listed [Newstead Air Raid Shelter](/source/Newstead_Air_Raid_Shelter) (western bank)
* the heritage-listed [Bulimba ferry wharf](/source/Bulimba_ferry_wharf) (eastern bank)
* the heritage-listed [Newstead House](/source/Newstead_House) within [Newstead Park](/source/Newstead_Park) (western bank)

Historically there were many wharves in the Teneriffe area and there remain a large number of associated warehouses on Macquarie Street which faced the river along the Bulimba Reach. However, [urban renewal](/source/urban_renewal) projects have replaced the wharves with residential apartments and those warehouses are now separated from the river. Similarly on the western bank, the heritage-listed [Bulimba House](/source/Bulimba_House) once occupied all the land down to the riverfront at the Bulimba Reach, but subdivision of the estate over the years has resulted in Bulimba House no longer being a riverbank property.
