The **bulbus cordis** (the **bulb of the heart**) is a part of the [developing heart](/source/Heart_development) that lies ventral to the [primitive ventricle](/source/Primitive_ventricle) after the [heart](/source/Heart) assumes its S-shaped form. The superior end of the bulbus cordis is also called the **conotruncus**.[1]

## Structure

In the early [tubular heart](/source/Tubular_heart), the bulbus cordis is the major outflow pathway.[2] It receives blood from the [primitive ventricle](/source/Primitive_ventricle), and passes it to the [truncus arteriosus](/source/Truncus_arteriosus).[2][3] After [heart looping](/source/Heart_development), it is located slightly to the left of the ventricle.[3]

### Development

Further information: [Heart development](/source/Heart_development)

The early bulbus cordis is formed by the fifth week of [development](/source/Embryonic_development).[4] The truncus arteriosus is derived from it later.[2]

The adjacent walls of the bulbus cordis and ventricle approximate, fuse, and finally disappear, and the bulbus cordis now communicates freely with the [right ventricle](/source/Right_ventricle), while the junction of the bulbus with the [truncus arteriosus](/source/Truncus_arteriosus_(embryology)) is brought directly ventral to and applied to the [atrial canal](/source/Atrial_canal).

By the upgrowth of the [ventricular septum](/source/Ventricular_septum) the bulbus cordis is separated from the [left ventricle](/source/Left_ventricle), but remains an integral part of the right ventricle, of which it forms the [infundibulum](/source/Infundibulum_(heart)).

Together, the bulbus cordis and the primitive ventricle give rise to the [ventricles](/source/Ventricle_(heart)) of the formed heart.

## Other animals

The bulbus cordis is shared in the development of many animals, including [frogs](/source/Frog)[3] and [fish](/source/Fish).[5]
