The Red Sox selected Hunter in the third round, 61st pick of the [1969 MLB draft](/source/1969_MLB_draft) out of the [University of Nebraska–Lincoln](/source/University_of_Nebraska%E2%80%93Lincoln). A dependable handyman, Hunter was used in [pinch hitting](/source/pinch-hitter), [pinch running](/source/pinch-runner), [DH](/source/designated_hitter), and late defensive replacement duties. He hit .294 (5-for-17) with five [runs](/source/run_(baseball)) and two [RBI](/source/run_batted_in) in 22 career games, including two [doubles](/source/double_(baseball)) and a .478 [on-base percentage](/source/on-base_percentage). In 12 infield appearances at [second base](/source/second_base) (9) and [third](/source/third_base) (3), he compiled a .969 [fielding percentage](/source/fielding_percentage) while committing an [error](/source/error_(baseball)) in 31 [chances](/source/total_chances).<ref name=BA/>
