Ross began his career in the 1880s, performing in [musical comedies](/source/Musical_theatre) and [vaudeville](/source/vaudeville). In 1900 he starred in the Broadway musical ''[Aunt Hannah](/source/Aunt_Hannah)'' at the [Bijou Theatre](/source/Bijou_Theatre_(Manhattan%2C_1878)); a work created by composer [A. Baldwin Sloane](/source/A._Baldwin_Sloane), lyricist [Clay M. Greene](/source/Clay_M._Greene), and writer [Matthew J. Ross made his screen debut in the silent film ''[The Burglar's Dilemma](/source/The_Burglar's_Dilemma)'' (1912) and had supporting roles in [W. C. Fields](/source/W._C._Fields)'s first two films, ''[Pool Sharks](/source/Pool_Sharks)'' and ''[His Lordship's Dilemma](/source/His_Lordship's_Dilemma)'' (both 1915). He also supported [Cissy Fitzgerald](/source/Cissy_Fitzgerald) and starred in many [comedies](/source/Comedy_(drama)) himself. At [Vim Comedy Company](/source/Vim_Comedy_Company) and King-Bee Films starting in 1917, Ross supported a young [Oliver Hardy](/source/Oliver_Hardy) and Chaplin impersonator [Billy West](/source/Billy_West_(silent_film_actor)) in several comedies. Ross and Hardy co-wrote and appeared in the film ''[Tootsies and Tamales](/source/Tootsies_and_Tamales)'' (1919). He co-wrote many ''Peggy'' comedies in 1925. By the late 1920s, he was mostly playing supporting roles for Sennett, in [Raymond McKee](/source/Raymond_McKee)'s ''Smith Family'' comedies and others.<ref name="travsd"/>
