**Sir Bryan Cartledge** [KCMG](/source/Knight_Commander_of_the_Order_of_St_Michael_and_St_George) (born 10 June 1931),[1] is a former British [diplomat](/source/Diplomat) and academic.

After studying at [Hurstpierpoint College](/source/Hurstpierpoint_College) and [St John's College, Cambridge](/source/St_John's_College%2C_Cambridge), he took research posts at [St Antony's College, Oxford](/source/St_Antony's_College%2C_Oxford) and the [Hoover Institute](/source/Hoover_Institute) at [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University). He was inspired to become a diplomat after being invited to assist the former British prime minister and foreign secretary Sir [Anthony Eden](/source/Anthony_Eden) with his memoirs.

In the British Diplomatic Service, Cartledge served in [Sweden](/source/Sweden), the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union) and [Iran](/source/Iran) before being appointed, in 1977, to be Private Secretary (Overseas Affairs) to the British prime minister; he served both [James Callaghan](/source/James_Callaghan) and [Margaret Thatcher](/source/Margaret_Thatcher) in that capacity before taking up his first ambassadorial appointment as British ambassador to [Hungary](/source/Hungary) in 1980. He then headed the Defence and Overseas Secretariat of the [Cabinet Office](/source/Cabinet_Office), as deputy secretary of the British Cabinet, before returning to Moscow as ambassador, where he had regular dealings with [Mikhail Gorbachev](/source/Mikhail_Gorbachev) and [Eduard Shevardnadze](/source/Eduard_Shevardnadze).

Cartledge left the Diplomatic Service in 1988 on his election to be Principal of [Linacre College, Oxford](/source/Linacre_College%2C_Oxford). In Oxford, he has edited six books on environmental issues. He holds diplomas in the [Hungarian language](/source/Hungarian_language) from the [University of Westminster](/source/University_of_Westminster) (UK) and [University of Debrecen](/source/University_of_Debrecen) (Hungary). His history of Hungary, *The Will to Survive*, fulfills an aspiration which grew out of his deep interest in the country where he served three years as ambassador.
