**Bruzhi** ([Belarusian](/source/Belarusian_language): Брузгі; [Russian](/source/Russian_language): Брузги, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Russian): *Bruzgi*) is a village in [Grodno District](/source/Grodno_District), [Grodno Region](/source/Grodno_Region), in western [Belarus](/source/Belarus).[1] It is administratively part of [Adelsk](/source/Adelsk) [selsoviet](/source/Selsoviet) and located close to the [border with Poland](/source/Belarus%E2%80%93Poland_border). The [Kuźnica](/source/Ku%C5%BAnica%2C_Podlaskie_Voivodeship)-Bruzhi border crossing is located near the village. Klachki and Trubka are two villages nearby.

## History

According to the 1921 census, Bruzgi had a population of 151, entirely [Polish](/source/Polish_people) by nationality and Catholic by confession.[2]

During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), Bruzgi was [occupied by the Soviet Union](/source/Occupation_of_Poland_(1939%E2%80%931945)) from 1939 to 1941, then by Nazi Germany until 1944, and then re-occupied by the Soviet Union afterwards.

Between 1940 and 1959, the village served as the administrative center of Bruzgi rural council (*[selsoviet](/source/Selsoviet)*). Until 2002, it was part of Padlabyennye rural council.[3]

In 2021, refugees, primarily [Iraqi](/source/Iraqis), entered the vicinity of Bruzgi, intending to depart from there to cross the [Polish Border](/source/Belarus%E2%80%93Poland_border)[4] at [Kuźnica](/source/Ku%C5%BAnica%2C_Podlaskie_Voivodeship).[5] In response, the [Polish government](/source/Polish_government) declared a [state of emergency](/source/State_of_emergency), stationing over 12,000 troops at the border. Politicians from Poland and the [European Union](/source/European_Union) accused Belarusian President [Alexander Lukashenko](/source/Alexander_Lukashenko) of using the migrants as a form of "[hybrid warfare](/source/Hybrid_warfare#Belarusian_activities_in_2021)" to destabilize Poland and other [EU member countries](/source/Eu_members).[6]
