'''Bruno Olivier Cheyrou''' (born 10 May 1978) is a French former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [midfielder](/source/midfielder).

== Club career ==
Cheyrou was born in [Suresnes](/source/Suresnes), Hauts-de-Seine.<ref name="Lequipe"/> After success with [Lille OSC](/source/Lille_OSC), where he scored against [Manchester United](/source/Manchester_United) in the [UEFA Champions League](/source/UEFA_Champions_League), Cheyrou attracted interest from a number of clubs around Europe, most notably [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool_F.C.). [Gérard Houllier](/source/G%C3%A9rard_Houllier) had the player scouted for several months by scout David Murray before deciding to sign him in the summer of 2002 for £4.5 million (€6.5m<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.uefa.com/FootballEurope/news/Kind=2/newsId=23906.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071218113710/http://www.uefa.com/FootballEurope/news/Kind=2/newsId=23906.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=18 December 2007|title=UEFA}}</ref>).

On signing him, Houllier dubbed Cheyrou the "new [Zidane](/source/Zinedine_Zidane)".<ref>{{cite news|title=Houllier - Cheyrou can be our Zidane|url=http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/latest-news/houllier-cheyrou-can-be-our-zidane|accessdate=19 April 2014|newspaper=[Liverpool F.C.](/source/Liverpool_F.C.)|date=8 October 2002|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140419234111/http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/latest-news/houllier-cheyrou-can-be-our-zidane|archivedate=19 April 2014}}</ref> Over time this tag proved to be a burden as he failed to live up to expectations. His first Liverpool goal came against Spartak Moscow in the Champions League,<ref>{{cite web

|title=Liverpool trounce Spartak
|publisher=BBC
|date=2 October 2002 |access-date=3 November 2009}}</ref> however, this would be his only goal of the 2002–03 season. Despite being left out of Liverpool's squad for the victorious [2003 Football League Cup Final](/source/2003_Football_League_Cup_Final)<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/2811805.stm|title=Liverpool lift Worthington Cup |publisher=BBC|date=2 March 2003 |access-date=8 October 2018}}</ref> he contributed in the earlier rounds, and was on the pitch as Liverpool secured their place in the final by beating [Sheffield United](/source/Sheffield_United).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/2675751.stm|title=Liverpool conquer brave Blades |publisher=BBC|date=21 January 2003 |access-date=8 October 2018}}</ref>

A spell of four goals in five games over the Christmas period of the 2003–04 season at one time suggested his Liverpool career may make a turn for the better. Arguably, the highlight of Cheyrou's Liverpool career was the winning goal he scored in the 33rd minute at [Chelsea](/source/Chelsea_F.C.) during the 2003–04 season.<ref>{{cite web

|publisher=BBC
|date=21 January 2004 |access-date=27 August 2009}}</ref> Three days later, Cheyrou had another memorable game for Liverpool in the [FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup) where he scored twice to help Liverpool beat [Newcastle](/source/Newcastle_United_F.C.) 2–1.<ref>{{cite web

At the beginning of the 2004–05 season, new manager [Rafael Benítez](/source/Rafael_Ben%C3%ADtez) deemed Cheyrou surplus to requirements and immediately loaned him to [Marseille](/source/Olympique_de_Marseille) in a season-long deal. He played 20 times for the club, scoring one goal. In the 2005–06 season, he was once again sent on a season-long loan, this time to [Bordeaux](/source/Girondins_de_Bordeaux), with a view to a permanent move; however, this failed to materialise. Ahead of the following season, he made a permanent move to Rennes and played there for three and a half seasons, scoring some goals. In January 2010 [Anorthosis Famagusta](/source/Anorthosis_Famagusta) signed the midfielder from [Stade Rennes](/source/Stade_Rennes). After six months with Anorthosis, the 32-year-old midfielder returned to France and signed a two-year contract for [FC Nantes](/source/FC_Nantes).<ref>[http://www.fcnantes.com/articles/article2809.php?num=3411 Bruno Cheyrou: "Apporter mon experience"]</ref>

== International career ==
Cheyrou has been capped three times by the [France national team](/source/France_national_football_team) between 2002 and 2004, making his senior international debut on 21 August 2002 in a 1–1 draw against [Tunisia](/source/Tunisia_national_football_team).

== Personal life ==
Bruno has a younger brother, [Benoît Cheyrou](/source/Beno%C3%AEt_Cheyrou), who played for [Toronto FC](/source/Toronto_FC). Cheyrou and his wife Constance have a son born in 2007 in France.
