**Brunei Bay** ([Malay](/source/Malay_language): *Teluk Brunei*) is on the northwestern coast of [Borneo](/source/Borneo) island, in [Brunei](/source/Brunei) and [Malaysia](/source/Malaysia). It is located east of [Bandar Seri Begawan](/source/Bandar_Seri_Begawan), Brunei.

It is the ocean gateway to the isolated [Temburong District](/source/Temburong_District) of Brunei, separated from the rest of Brunei by the Malaysian [Sarawak State](/source/Sarawak) surrounding it to the bay.

A 30-kilometre (19 mi) roadway connecting the Muara and Temburong districts of Brunei, completed in 2018, crosses over the Brunei bay. The section going across the Brunei bay measures in at 14-kilometre (8.7 mi).[1]

## Environment

Brunei Bay contains some 8,000 hectares of tidal [mudflats](/source/Mudflat) and sandflats, [seagrass](/source/Seagrass) beds, [coral reefs](/source/Coral_reef), [mangroves](/source/Mangrove), beach forest and [sandstone](/source/Sandstone) islets. These have been identified by [BirdLife International](/source/BirdLife_International) as an [Important Bird Area](/source/Important_Bird_Area) (IBA) because it supports significant numbers of the populations of various bird species, including [Bonaparte's nightjars](/source/Bonaparte's_nightjar), [lesser adjutants](/source/Lesser_adjutant), [Storm's storks](/source/Storm's_stork), [Chinese egrets](/source/Chinese_egret), [greater sandplovers](/source/Greater_sandplover), [spotted greenshanks](/source/Spotted_greenshank) and [roseate terns](/source/Roseate_tern). Threats include inshore [trawling](/source/Trawling), [waterbird](/source/Waterbird) hunting, and [habitat fragmentation](/source/Habitat_fragmentation) through mangrove clearance.[2]
