# Bruce Stowell

**Bruce Stowell** (born 20 September 1941) is an English former [football](/source/Association_football) player and manager.

## Playing career

Born in [Bradford](/source/Bradford), Stowell began his career with [Leeds United](/source/Leeds_United_F.C.), before signing amateur forms with [Bradford City](/source/Bradford_City_A.F.C.) in May 1958.[1] He became a part-time professional in December 1958, and became fully professional in June 1967.[1] Upon turning professional, Stowell became club captain at City.[2] In October 1970, Stowell played in his 344th [Football League](/source/The_Football_League) game for City, breaking [George Robinson](/source/George_Robinson_(footballer_born_1878))'s 55-year-old appearance record.[1][2] Stowell made a total of 401 appearances for City in the Football League,[3] and 437 games for them across all competitions.[2]

Stowell also played for [Rotherham United](/source/Rotherham_United_F.C.), making 16 appearances in the Football League for them,[3] before moving to Australia, where he played for [Pan Hellenic](/source/Sydney_Olympic_Football_Club) and [Blacktown City](/source/Blacktown_City_FC).[1][4]

## Coaching career

After retiring as a player, Stowell coached [Sydney Olympic](/source/Sydney_Olympic_Football_Club), spent almost 10 years as Queensland state director of coaching,[5] [Newcastle Breakers](/source/Newcastle_Breakers_FC)[6][7] and [Brisbane Strikers](/source/Brisbane_Strikers_F.C.).[1][4]

He also coached in Malaysia,[2] and was the head coach for [Johor](/source/Johor_Darul_Ta'zim_F.C.) from 1999 to the end of 2000 season.[8][9]

Stowell later returned to Queensland, becoming head football coach of the [Queensland Academy of Sport](/source/Queensland_Academy_of_Sport).[10]

He remained there until 2007, when he joined the Tasmanian Institute of Sport.[11] His tenure there finished a year later.[12]
