Monastery in Shropshire, England

**Bromfield Priory** was a priory in [Shropshire](/source/Shropshire), [England](/source/England), located at [Bromfield](/source/Bromfield%2C_Shropshire) near [Ludlow](/source/Ludlow).

It was a college of [secular canons](/source/Canon_(priest)#Secular_canons), founded before 1061. The [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book) of 1086 records a remarkable amount of detail about the priory and its history.[1] The priory held 20 [hides](/source/Hide_(unit)) of land in 1066 and 10 hides by 1086, including land at [Halford](/source/Halford%2C_Shropshire), [Dinchope](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dinchope&action=edit&redlink=1), [Ashford Bowdler](/source/Ashford_Bowdler), [Felton](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Felton,_Shropshire&action=edit&redlink=1), [Burway](/source/Burway), and [Ledwyche](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ledwyche&action=edit&redlink=1), as well as the hamlets of [Prior’s Halton](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Prior%E2%80%99s_Halton&action=edit&redlink=1), [Lady Halton](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lady_Halton&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Hill Halton](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hill_Halton&action=edit&redlink=1).

In 1086 there were 12 canons. St Giles in [Ludford](/source/Ludford%2C_Shropshire) was a chapel of the priory.

From 1258, the Priory was under the control of [Gloucester Abbey](/source/Gloucester_Abbey): one of the priors of Bromfield, Henry Foliot, subsequently became Abbot of Gloucester.

In 1538, as part of the [dissolution of the monasteries](/source/Dissolution_of_the_monasteries), the priory was closed; the priory house was acquired in 1541 by Charles Foxe. It remained the Foxe family home until it was destroyed by fire in the 17th century. [2]

The priory church survives as [Bromfield's parish church](/source/St_Mary_the_Virgin's_Church%2C_Bromfield).
