The **British Museum Act 1963** (c. 24) is an [act](/source/Act_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) of the [Parliament of the United Kingdom](/source/Parliament_of_the_United_Kingdom). It replaced the [British Museum Act 1902](/source/British_Museum_Act_1902) ([2 Edw. 7](/source/2_Edw._7). c. 12). It was introduced by the second ministry of the Conservative Prime Minister [Harold Macmillan](/source/Harold_Macmillan). The act forbids the [British Museum](/source/British_Museum) and the [Natural History Museum](/source/Natural_History_Museum%2C_London) from disposing of their holdings, except in a small number of special circumstances. In May 2005 a judge of the [High Court of England and Wales](/source/High_Court_of_Justice) ruled that [Nazi](/source/Nazi)-looted [Old Master](/source/Old_Master) artworks held at the British Museum could not be returned.[1]

The act also made the Natural History Museum an independent organisation from the British Museum, with its own board of trustees.
