'''''British Catholic History''''' is a biannual [peer-reviewed](/source/peer-reviewed) [academic journal](/source/academic_journal) published by [Cambridge University Press](/source/Cambridge_University_Press) on behalf of the [Catholic Record Society](/source/Catholic_Record_Society). In its early years it was known as '''''Biographical Studies of English Catholics''''', and from 1959 to 2015 as '''''Recusant History'''''.

The journal covers the study of the [Roman Catholic Church in the British Isles](/source/History_of_the_Catholic_Church).<ref>{{cite book |author=Salzman, Michael G. |title=The World of Learning 2004 |publisher=Routledge |location=New York |year=2003 |page=1722 |isbn=1-85743-182-0 }}</ref><ref>{{cite book |author=Miola, Robert S. |title=Early modern Catholicism: an anthology of primary sources |publisher=Oxford University Press |location=Oxford [Oxfordshire] |year=2007 |page=8 |isbn=978-0-19-925985-4 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=okJPU1niEMkC }}</ref> The [editor-in-chief](/source/editor-in-chief) is Katy Gibbons ([University of Portsmouth](/source/University_of_Portsmouth)).

==History==
The journal was established in 1951 under the title ''Biographical Studies of English Catholics'',<ref>{{cite book |last=Kennedy |first=Arthur Garfield |title=A Concise Bibliography for Students of English |year=1960 |publisher=[Stanford University Press](/source/Stanford_University_Press) |edition=4th |page=180}}</ref> under the editorship of A. F. Allison ([British Library](/source/British_Library)) and [D. M. Rogers](/source/David_Rogers_(librarian)) ([Bodleian Library](/source/Bodleian_Library)). With volume 5 (1959) the title was changed to ''Recusant History: A Journal of Research in Post-Reformation Catholic History in the British Isles'', a reference to [recusancy](/source/recusancy) as a defining characteristic of early modern English [Catholicism](/source/Catholicism) and a move away from the more strictly biographical focus of the early issues. It obtained its current title in 2015 with the switch to Cambridge University Press.
