# Brigade group

A **brigade group** is a term used primarily in [armies](/source/Armies) of the [Commonwealth of Nations](/source/Commonwealth_of_Nations) for an *ad hoc* arrangement of forces. It can be a temporary or permanent organisation.

It generally refers to a formation which includes three or four [battlegroups](/source/Battlegroup_(army)), or an [infantry](/source/Infantry) [brigade](/source/Brigade) (three [battalions](/source/Battalion)), supported by [armoured](/source/Tank), [artillery](/source/Artillery), [field engineer](/source/Combat_engineer), [aviation](/source/Military_aviation) and support units, and amounting to about 5,000 soldiers.[1] A brigade group represents the smallest unit able to operate independently for extended periods on the battlefield. It is similar to the concept of a [regimental combat team](/source/Regimental_combat_team) (RCT), which was once used by the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army), but which now uses the term *[brigade combat team](/source/Brigade_combat_team)* (BCT). The [United States Marine Corps](/source/United_States_Marine_Corps) continues to use the term *regimental combat team*.
