'''Stara Prochownia''' ({{langx|en|The Old Gunpowder Depot}}) also known as the '''Bridge Gate''' ({{langx|pl|Brama Mostowa}}) is a historic building in [Warsaw New Town](/source/Warsaw_New_Town). It is located on ''ulica Boleść'', just below the New Town and the [Warsaw Barbican](/source/Warsaw_Barbican), on the [Vistula River](/source/Vistula_River) escarpment.

==History==
The building was initially constructed in 1582 by Queen [Anna I of Poland](/source/Anna_Jagiellon) as one of the gates in the city walls of Warsaw.<ref name="warszawa1939">{{cite web |author = |url = http://www.warszawa1939.pl/index.php?r1=rybaki_2&r3=0 |title = Dom Poprawy i Brama Mostowa |work = www.warszawa1939.pl |publisher = |pages = |page = |date = |accessdate = 2009-04-08|language=pl}}</ref> Unlike other gates, it was built to prevent fire from spreading from the densely built-up Old Town to the [newly built wooden bridge](/source/Sigismund_Augustus_Bridge) that crossed the river. The gate gained the name ''Brama Mostowa'' (Bridge Gate).<ref>{{Cite web |title=Wyborcza.pl |url=https://warszawa.wyborcza.pl/warszawa/7,54420,13196511,jeden-z-najdluzszych-mostow-na-swiecie-stal-w-warszawie.html?disableRedirects=true |access-date=2022-03-12 |website=warszawa.wyborcza.pl}}</ref> Although the bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1603, and subsequent bridges were built to the south, the name stuck.<ref name="warszawa1939" /><ref>{{Cite web |title=K. In the 17th century, when the city walls lost their strategical significance in warfare, the gate was converted into a gunpowder depot, which gave its name to the contemporary name.<ref name="warszawa1939" /> Expanded between 1648 and 1649 it served its new role until 1769, when it was converted into a city prison.<ref name="warszawa1939" /> Around that time it was also expanded (possibly by [Jakub Fontana](/source/Jakub_Fontana)) along the Boleść Street.<ref name="warszawa1939" /> Further expansion was done between 1796 and 1806.

Following the [November Uprising](/source/November_Uprising) and the Russian decision to erect the [Warsaw Citadel](/source/Warsaw_Citadel), in 1833 the prison had been liquidated and the building was refurbished to become a private house.<ref name="warszawa1939" /> After the [World War II](/source/World_War_II) parts of the building were rebuilt in their 18th century form.<ref name="warszawa1939" />

In 1994, a plaque was unveiled on the wall of the House of Punishment and Improvement, commemorating the soldiers of the "Dzik" battalion who fought in this place in the [Warsaw Uprising](/source/Warsaw_Uprising). Since 2002, the complex houses the educational institution of the Capital City of Warszawy – Capital Center of Cultural Education National Education Commission.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Nasze Przestrzenie Edukacyjne – Stołeczne Centrum Edukacji Kulturalnej |url=https://scek.pl/nasze-przestrzenie-edukacyjne/ |access-date=2022-03-12 |website=scek.pl}}</ref> The facility is called ''Starej Prochowni SCEK.''<ref>{{Cite web |title=Kontakt – Stołeczne Centrum Edukacji Kulturalnej |url=https://scek.pl/kontakt/ |access-date=2022-03-12 |website=scek.pl}}</ref> In 2010–2012, the cellars of the building were renovated, including it in the Trail of the Cultural Cellars of the Old Town. At the same time, an amphitheater was built on the northern side of the former moat.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Stara Prochownia SCEK {{!}} Szlak Kulturalnych Piwnic Starego Miasta |url=https://szlakpiwnic.pl/obiekty/stara-prochownia-scek/ |access-date=2022-03-12 |language=pl-PL}}</ref>
