He was drafted in the ninth round, 211th overall, by the [Pittsburgh Penguins](/source/Pittsburgh_Penguins) in the [1992 NHL entry draft](/source/1992_NHL_entry_draft).
==Playing career==
After being named [Minnesota Mr. Hockey](/source/Minnesota_Mr._Hockey) in 1992 for his play at [White Bear Lake Area High School](/source/White_Bear_Lake_Area_High_School), Bonin entered the [University of Minnesota](/source/University_of_Minnesota). His stellar time with the Golden Gophers culminated with winning the [Hobey Baker Award](/source/Hobey_Baker_Award), given to the most outstanding collegiate hockey player in the [NCAA](/source/NCAA), in his senior season. Bonin led the nation in scoring during the 1995-1996 season at the University of Minnesota, and was named a first-team All-American, WCHA Player of the Year, first-team All-WCHA, and team Most Valuable Player in both his junior and senior seasons
Bonin made his professional debut with the [IHL](/source/International_Hockey_League_(1945%E2%80%932001))'s [Cleveland Lumberjacks](/source/Cleveland_Lumberjacks) in the 1996–97 season. He then joined the [AHL](/source/American_Hockey_League)'s [Syracuse Crunch](/source/Syracuse_Crunch) for the [1997–98 season](/source/1997%E2%80%9398_AHL_season), tallying 69 points in 67 games.
Bonin made his [NHL](/source/National_Hockey_League) debut with the Penguins in the [1998–99 season](/source/1998%E2%80%9399_NHL_season), appearing in five regular-season and three playoff games. The rest of the season was split between the IHL's [Kansas City Blades](/source/Kansas_City_Blades) and the AHL's [Adirondack Red Wings](/source/Adirondack_Red_Wings). After another full season with the Syracuse Crunch and most of one with the Cleveland Lumberjacks, Bonin joined the [Minnesota Wild](/source/Minnesota_Wild) for seven NHL games in the [2000–01 season](/source/2000%E2%80%9301_NHL_season).
In his 12 career NHL games, Bonin was held off the scoresheet. He also went scoreless in his three career [Stanley Cup](/source/Stanley_Cup) playoff games.
