Saint '''Bretannio''' (also Bretanion, Bretannion, Vetranio, Vetranion) was a [bishop of Tomi](/source/Archbishop_of_Tomi_(Constan%C5%A3a)) (today [Constanţa](/source/Constan%C5%A3a), [Romania](/source/Romania)) during the fourth century. Of [Cappadocian](/source/Cappadocian) origin, he occupied the see of Tomi from 360.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.biserica.org/WhosWho/DTR/V/Vetranion.html |title=Vetranion - Dictionarul Teologilor Romani<!-- Bot generated title --> |access-date=2007-09-20 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071008003345/http://biserica.org/WhosWho/DTR/V/Vetranion.html |archive-date=2007-10-08 |url-status=dead }}</ref>

According to [Sozomen](/source/Sozomen), during the [campaign against the Goths](/source/Gothic_War_(376-382)) in this region, the emperor [Valens](/source/Valens) stopped at Tomi and urged the populace to convert to [Arianism](/source/Arianism) and reject the [Nicene Creed](/source/Nicene_Creed). Bretannio spoke out against this and for this he was exiled.<ref>[https://books.google.com/books?id=24hRAAAAYAAJ&dq=Bretannio&pg=PA391 Fleury, Claude. ''The ecclesiastical history of M. l'abbé Fleury'', Vol. 2, T. Wood, 1728, p. 391]</ref> However, due to public outcry over the bishop's exile, he was allowed to return.<ref name=SB>{{in lang|it}} [http://www.santiebeati.it/dettaglio/38655 Santi Beati: San Bretannione]</ref>

[Basil the Great](/source/Basil_the_Great) requested of the ruler of [Scythia Minor](/source/Scythia_Minor_(Roman_province)), Junius Soranus (Saran), that he should send him the [relics](/source/relics) of saints of that region. Basil was sent the relics of [Sabbas the Goth](/source/Sabbas_the_Goth) in [Caesarea](/source/Caesarea_Mazaca), [Cappadocia](/source/Cappadocia), in 373 or 374 accompanied by a letter entitled the 'Epistle of the Church of God in Gothia to the Church of God located in Cappadocia and to all the Local Churches of the Holy Universal Church'. The sending of Sabbas' relics and the writing of the actual letter has been attributed to Bretannio.

He may have represented Tomi at the [council held in Constantinople in 381](/source/First_Council_of_Constantinople), but his name may have been confused with the name of the bishop Gerontius (Terentius) of Tomi, who may have been the actual participant at this council.<ref name=SB/> [Baronio](/source/Cardinal_Cessare_Baronio), in compiling his [martyrology](/source/martyrology), seems to have arbitrarily assigned him the [feast day](/source/feast_day) of January 25.<ref name=SB/>
